Wondering if anyone has experience with fecal transplant
Replies sorted oldest to newest
Not yet! but getting ready. Just got a script for my donor to test his stool. Ordered the Fecal Transplant book from Amazon.
FYI - Dr. Oz had a demonstration on his show this 12/10-11th 2013 about fecal transplants that was misleading. He said they were being done all over to help restore healthy guts and some people were using them to help loose weight! He had an animation showing a kind of wand spewing poop out into the colon (I guess). He didn't talk about testing or doing it under a doctor's direction etc. I might have missed part of it. If interested you might want to look up the segment on the internet under his TV show.
FDA in April stopped all doctors from doing FT other than C diff. The doctors all had to reapply and waiting approval. Who knows how long it takes. Lu can buy at book on how to do it on Amazon but you can't do it under a doctors supervision. My GI said to try it gladly gave me a script but other than that she said go look it up on the internet. I guess just covering herself.
Thank you all. Hymm, seems like drugs are prescribed left and right. Maybe not a lot of money to be made with this procedure. Why are we left 'on our own" with this? Sorry, a bit frustrated and nearing the end of my rope….
Les, what have you tried?
why are drs forbidden to do it?and why only cdiff? is it difficult?dangerous to apply yourself?
The chief *known* risk of fecal transplant is getting an infection from the donor. The concern is that this procedure is not very well tested yet, so we don't know all of the downsides, how to select donors, or even what it's particularly effective for. New technologies tend to start out with excessive enthusiasm. Nevertheless the FDA is apparently relaxing some of the obstacles.
I recently asked my surgeon about it and he said they know have a pill that does the same thing.
I don't think the pill is available in the US yet? I think Canada is developing it? You have to take like 25 poop pills which is ok by me if I can get my hands on them? My surgeon heard of them but has no way of getting them for me yet. If u know how I can get them let me know, so I can pass the info to my doctor.
Ps Less, I'm at the end of my rope as well. Homemade kifer is making a difference along with 1000 mg turmeric. I do use canassa and pentasa. My surgeon told me to rotate probiotics every three weeks too.
Allycat,
I think we have the same surgeon. Also, I didn't know fecal transplant was also for pouchitis. Good to know and hope it works. Please keep us posted.

Also take a look into a mild hookworm infection. Hookworms secrete a chemical that tells your immune system to calm down.
Most people can't get past the "ick" factor, but I would have tried that before my colectomy had I known about the option.
