I'm wondering if anyone has experience with taking oral anti-fungals and how (if at all) they affect GI and pouch function.

I've had fungal infections on and off since being on steroids and antibiotics for my UC, mainly athlete's foot and a persistent fungal infection on my peristomal skin. I'm going to the dermatologist this week for suspected ringworm on my legs (ringworm is a superficial fungal infection). In the past I've only used topical creams.

In case she proposes it, I want to be prepared to know how I feel about taking oral anti-fungals. Is it something we should think twice about the way that we're generally more cautious about taking antibiotics? Any experience or advice would be appreciated.

it is ironic this topic came up just when i got it..i have ongoing problems first diagnosed as chronic pouchitis now dr. shen says bacteria overgrowth..either way only thing was working was rotating antibiotics..doing it for 5 years..lately i wrote dr. shen that my last one augmentin only lasted a week and my next one up keflex may not be working as well as it could or should..anyway he writes me back to take antifungi diflucan for 7 days...stop antibiotics..this kind of came out of left field to me since he e-mails they are very, very short ..sentence or two..i wrote back would try after thanksgiving as i am afraid to stop antibiotic and be unbearably in pain as would happen..but no sure where he is going with this..looked on internet and there have been studies on mice with colitus and testing anti fungis on them for some defect gene or something..anyway its apparent he wants to see how i do on it without antibiotic..i find it hard to believe 7 days of this pill will put me all straight away!!! the problem or syptoms i have i have had from back when i had operation and not since i took antibiotics..in fact those are only thing that keeps them in check..any thought out there on this anti fungi thing and bacterial growth?if in fact that is even my problem!!!

I have been prescribed Diflucan numerous times due to a fungal infection I picked up in the process of having my surgeries. I never had any side effects and believe it did its job because the infection went away and didn't come back. I was also precribed Keflex when I had moles removed at the dermotologist as a precautionary. I took the Keflex for about 3 days with terrible side effects such as stomach pains and cramps, a continuous urgency to empty my bowels, burping gas that had an awful taste, and terrible smelling stool. These are common side effects of Keflex. Good Luck fungal infections aren't fun.

so strange all our differences with various drugs..your issue with keflex..i have none on it right now but cannot take flagl myself get very sick to stomach..

point being when we listen to each other we have to remember there is a very wide descrepancy between people..what may work for one will not work for another and visa versa..that includes foods to eat as well
