I've heard that Cleveland Clinic is the place to go for Crohn's. I currently have a J pouch and am experiencing a flare up. My GI is trying to convince me to have a takedown of my J pouch and I really want to avoid that. I am seeing my dr today and wanted to ask for a referral to the Cleveland Clinic. Suggestions please...

Dr. Bo Chen, GI at Cleveland Clinic Ohio, is pretty recognized as the master of managing (and saving) troubled J-pouches. I have heard and read that he doesnt give up on pouches easily... even those with Crohns which is usually contraindicated for getting a J-pouch. He has many tricks up his sleeve, done much publishing on problem pouches, (crohns included) and is internationally acclaimed. Do search on this site or on internet in general, you will find much to confirm that you will be in the best of hands with him.
I'm not a patient of his, but I believe it's "Shen" rather than "Chen."
you are right Scott.. it is Shen, not Chen. Sorry for the typo...
I see him and he is great! The best even though I have what he believes in crohns he don't give up easily and is a wonderful person.
Dr. Shen is a good doctor but I don't think his office is very organized. Now I'm used to dr Remzi running a tight ship and dr Shen with me as a patient has dropped the ball a few times. But he is a good doctor. Just not organized
I found Dr Shen through his research papers. He is an unusually gracious physician and he corresponded with me via email even though I was not his patient. He recommended rifaximin to help my pouchitis and now I my quality of life has changed dramatically for the better.
I had my JPouch surgery done at CC - Florida. Dr. Wexner is my surgeon he is the director of the colon rectal surgery department. He is wonderful, his team is also the best. CC in Florida is convenient for me and it is under the same medical expertise CC - Ohio.
FYI,
Dr. Shen has published many papers with other doctors, some mentioned above, on j-pouch studies at CC. You can search for them on the internet by topic. I don't know if there are any regarding your specific problem but I've never searched for crohns related topics.

You have to be on top of him if you need anything once you leave. He is extremely kind and will listen to you and explain things in great detail. I spend an hour usually when I go there. I had a email conversation with him the other night at 11:30, usually he answers best at night when not busy I realize. He is constantly working and busy but calling his nurse has always been easy to get things through if email is not consistant.
Thanks for your reply. I found research papers by Dr Shen on rifaximin and pouchitis a few months ago and have been taking 275 mg 2x a day with incredibly good results.
