Back Story:I just came back from a pouchoscopy (first time with out sedation...wasn't as bad as I thought, but still not a fan). I have a fistula that showed up last weekend (MRI this weekend to see where it's coming from...), and also had a blockage last weekend (yay me!). Anyway, he wanted to check out what was going on because I have been experiencing urgency and such. He found inflammation in my small intestine and now is thinking it may be Crohn's not UC that I have (he isn't the doctor who diagnosed me. I was at a pediatric GI at diagnosis, and the markers pointed at UC). He thinks this because of the inflammation and the fact that I've had pouchitis and the like very much. Either way, he had the same course of treatment. He's putting my on Pentasa and 6mp because Flagyl and Cipro made me sick the last time (and that is a short term fix).
He also wants me on probiotics. I was taking VSL3 DS (double strength) a while back. I hated it because it's powdery and tastes gross. But, that's what he wants me on. He sent it through to the pharmacy because it's much cheaper through insurance BUT my insurance no longer covers it. If I buy the over the counter VSL3, it's close to $100 a week. I'm not that rich! I'm getting in touch with my GI to see what other probiotics I can try.
What probiotics do you all take? Why is one better than another? I know VSL3 has 8 different strands, but why is one strand better for us than another?
