Hi all,

Just a quick question, I've been reading things on the internet about how certain foods are tolerable one day and intolerable the next in the early stages of using a j pouch. My question is after the adaption period and once things become "normal" for us do foods Tend to stay either tolerable or not or do they still shift according to each time we try and eat them? For example, some days I do really well with cookies, but then the next time I try, I will end up either with cramping or loose stools. So at some point will my j pouch finally accept or reject cookies or is it always going to depend on each time I try them?

Thanks in advance

Manny,
I have found that it is not just the foods but which other foods that you eat them with and in what state you eat them (raw, cooked, steamed, fried...)...the 1st 10 yrs (the 80's) I was lost without a map until I learned that certain foods digested better when not mixed with others (protiens with carbs or fruits with carbs)...I eat mostly everything (I even drink the occasional hot chocolate with real milk) but I have learned that separating my food groups makes for easier digestion for me...keeping a food diary including when, with what and with what meds etc helps you to map it all out for your body...that said, there will still be days that fall between the cracks and no matter what you eat your reactions make no logical sense.
You will find some general rules that will work for you but don't forget to test your limits every now and then and try something new.

I believe you definitely build up your tolerance with certain foods as time goes on. There were many foods that I was unable to eat without issues that I am able to eat now with no issues. I love chocolate and usually get an urge for it late at night. Right after my takedown when I would eat chocolate at night it was an automatic mess clean up in the middle of the night. There wasn't a time that went by that I ate chocolate and didn't have to clean up a terribe mess in the middle of the night. I can proudly say today I can eat chocolate at midnight and be fine. No mess, no stomach issues, nothing. I also ate a variety of Chinese food and 3 egg rolls at about 11pm before bed and I had no problems I was ecstatic. I could never even fathom that 6 months ago and even when I had UC that was playing with fire. Everything gets better with time just stay positive. Good Luck!!

I eat whatever I want whenever I want. The only real difference between before/after J-pouch is that those foods that give me gas really cause discomfort when stretching the pouch.

So, besides gas causing more pain that my colon days, no real difference.

However, the first 3 months post surgeries is a bit iffy as your system adjusts. Be sure to chew your foods a little better with a pouch.
