Hi, I'm new to this forum and new to the j-pouch. I had my stage 2 of 3 surgery in the UK to form the j-pouch laparoscopically 11 days ago, and was discharged from hospital 6 days ago.

I'm doing pretty well I think, much better than the first operation to remove my colitis-ridden colon, which resulted in a 7 week stay in hospital. However I do have a few niggles which I hope some people who have already been through this can comment upon.

Firstly, did you experience any pain in the anus after the surgery? I didn't have this immediately after the op, its been worse since I came home. It kinda feels like my coccyx is bruised, a dull sort of aching pain. I didn't pass any mucus at all the first couple of days after my operation, followed by a few days of passing loads without forcing it, first without much control but then with no leaks at all. However now it seems to have stopped almost completely, and I'm worried there is some up there but I'm subconsciously holding it in.

Secondly, did anyone else have troubles peeing after the op? It seems to take me an age to get started when I need to go, and when I do the flow rate is diminished somewhat. It sometimes takes a couple of goes of this to feel like I've finished. Is this just muscle or nerve damage from the op and will it improve over time? I don't think I have a UTI because there are no other symptoms of infection, it doesn't sting etc.

Do you think these symptoms could point to an infection in the pouch or an abscess or something? I've got to go back for a blood test tomorrow so I guess elevated infection markers will show that up if I do, but wanted to ask on here to see if anyone else had an opinion first.

Cheers, Josh

Both of those were the norm for me after Step 2. I do think you should share the symptoms with your doctor just in case, but I went through the exact same thing too. The urinary function should improve with time, also make sure you are staying hydrated -- it's harder to keep hydrated with a loop ileostomy and that can contribute to the difficulty urinating.
I agree it sounds like everything is normal. I am 5 months post takedown and usually when I use the bathroom often or I hold off going to the bathroom for a while I have a lingering pain in the rectum area and feels like a bruised butt bone. I also had the same issue peeing it took me a while to get it started and I actually had to lean forward while sitting on the toilet to get going. I think it is a mixture of scar tissue and learning how to start using those muscles again. Now as a guy I have enough control to pee standing up which is a big achievement.
Cheers for the replies. I'm actually not sure if it wasn't the Tramadol doing a bit of a number on my bladder, since I'm peeing much better almost immediately after stopping taking it yesterday. Butt pain is mostly gone today as well, managed to comfortably pass a bunch of mucus when I got up so that helps, but I do tend to have a good day followed by a bad day!

The most annoying issue I'm dealing with today is that one side of the stoma is coming away from the skin a bit and is very sore! Stoma nurse says it could take a few days to heal and to just fill it up with stoma powder, which I was doing anyway to be fair, but its a bit of a pain!
Hey! I don't know if anyone is still following this post but it has seemed helpful. I would just like to add to it if I may.

I just had a surgery to redo a leaking s-pouch that hadn't been hooked up yet. Surgery went wonderful! After I got over the incision pain, it was just about two weeks. Then I walked a mile because I felt great. Two days after I started having pain in my anus like Josh. It also felt like I had a bruised tailbone, hard to urinate as well. Takes several tries to get started. Passing mucous on and off. A lot of these symptoms to me are almost like my symptoms before. Very scary, don't want that to be true!

One different thing though was I do wipe blood.. Only once have I had it change the toilet water red. I'm 3 weeks post op now.

Any input will help. Going to the doctor Thursday to get their input! Just looking for peace of mind hopefully.

Hey Rodlg,

My response above was right after my 6-15-15 surgery.  Well I had a second redo and that didn't work so I ended up just removing the internal pouch and am left with a permanent ileostomy.  I'm 24 years old and no one wants to hear that but I've gotten so much of my life back, it's soooo worth it!!

But to say the least after that surgery, I had a leak in the pouch which was causing an abscess to form which was what the pressure was from.  It feels like a bruise.  Mine didn't get better but that isn't to say yours won't

I hope you feel better and that your pouch works out!!

Shane
