Hello All,

My wife is 6 months post takedown. She had a severe pouch outlet (anastomosis) stricture dilated under endoscopy. The surgeon said he was able to "successfully" dilate the stricture.

1) What is the typical recovery of this procedure?

2) Is there immediate complete relief or is it a gradual recover?

3) How quickly can the stricture re-develop? We were told that because it is scar tissue that it takes time.

So far we have experienced complete relief of pain, cramping and leakage.

Urgency is improved, but frequency is still very high, 15+ times per day.

Also still experiencing lots of pressure while trying to empty.

Just trying to find out what to expect before contacting surgeon so early after procedure.

Thanks

I have a pouch outlet stricture that has been dilated at least four times. Unfortunately, mine is chronic and is maintained by repeat dilations. I'm not sure if the surgeon did a balloon dilation or finger dilation on your wife. As of present, mone have all been finger dilations. However at my next gi visit we will discuss a balloon dilation

Your wife can very well do fine from here on in. I think it is important to find out if she has any inflammation at the connection. I would think not as the surgeon would have noted it and presribed rectal meds for it if so. I only had leakage the first eve on one occasion after a prior dilation. Your wife is most likely in the bathroom repeatedly as the stricture makes it difficult to fully empty pouch at one sitting. I have found my best relief is within the first month or so after a dilation, but again that is just my experience.

I have other concurrent issues such as inflammation in my cuff and the very last two centimeters of anal canal which is chronic and complicates my situation. I take rectal meds and cipro pretty continually to deal with these added issues. Best of luck to you both.

I had several dilations done at the hospital and then I did self-dilations.
The recovery after the procedure is basically nil.
I think pressure when emptying is normal to a point. I felt pressure in my pouch area for probably a year or so. I think I was just hyper-aware of all sensations down there.
I had immediate relief after dilations. However, my stricture would start to tighten up again within 2 wks and I would notice difficulty emptying again.
My stricture was quite low down so it was easy to dilate, which is why the surgeon eventually just showed me how to do it myself.
If your wife felt like she was emptying very well after the dilation but it has gotten progressively more difficult then perhaps the stricture is tightening again.
