My pouch is 18 years old, and up until about 4 years ago, I lead a wonderful life. After MANY scans, scopes, etc. I was diagnosed with probable Crohn's and have been on Remicade for 9 months. Had a CTscan done in June and there was no inflammation, so the doctors are pleased with my progress. My problem is I have pain in both left and right side of my abdomen that the docs have said are adhesions (the right one is a stricture at the old stoma sight.) What's upsetting is, unless I go for adhesion lysis, I will have to live with this pain forever. None of my doctors think it's a good idea to do more surgery on me. I just don't know what to do. I've read that lysing adhesions doesn't work. I've been out of school this year, and I really want to go back to teaching in Sept. Anyone have any advice? THANKS!!!!

Hmmm... Ask people who have had lysis of adhesions. It does work. But, sometimes adhesions reform. To me though, I sure would not want to live with constant pain if there was a chance releasing the adhesions could work.
I'd get other surgical opinions.

I had lysis of adhesions done twice and I got great relief both times.
Agreed. Had it done in 2007 after a year of issues and have had none since.
Was it done by scope or open? How was the recovery?
THANKS!!
THANKS!!
WAIT! Before you do anything involving cutting or The Big H building....
See if you find any physical therapists in your area that do something called "Myofascial release". The easiest way is to just start calling a PT clinic and ask if any of their therapists do any Myofascial or visceral work. If they don't, ask if they know of someone/someplace that does know.
I've had two full-blown abdominal surgeries as a result of scar tissue. I'm just coming through a partial blockage that would have been a total blockage without the Myofascial work. I actually had the PT train my hubby on how to do it, so now I can get the treatment as often as I need it!
Heads up: it can be painful as the PT will dig her hands waaaay into your scar tissue to try to break it up. However, the pain lasts only for the duration of the treatment. Once her hands are off, there is little to no residual pain.
I'd been having Myofascial work done regularly for many years following the first obstruction in 2002. About 2008, things changed and I couldn't get the treatment. I'm certain that led to the blockage in 2011. So now I'm trying to be more diligent about getting the treatment regularly.
Go for it! It couldn't hurt and it could work AND save you from some surgeries! Feel free to PM if you want more info!
Take care!

jilly was this pt covered by your insurance? Also who gave you the referral-surgeon, GP, GI?
Why did you stop the treatments?
It was covered by insurance for a while. Then some idiot decided it was palliative care and wouldn't pay. Of course that was AFTER I'd received the treatment! That was back in the 2002-2005 time frame. After insurance quit paying, I paid the PT under the table to treat me. Eventually, she said that,as we'd become friends, she couldn't "hurt" me anymore. Remember I said that breaking up the scar tissue is paaaaaaaaaainful.
I got treatment again after my second obstruction in 2011. It takes a doctors referral for insurance to pay for any PT with my plan. That worked again until we had insurance issues. That PT wouldn't treat me outside of the clinic as I'd started as a clinic patient and she didn't want to "steal" patients from the clinic.
So here I am, July 2013, with a partial blockage! I offered to pay my friend so that she wouldn't mind inflicting pain. She then proceeded to teach my hubby how to do this! Now we are happy and don't have to rely on anyone else!
I think that answered all you questions?
