Hi Everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has ever found that going on an antibiotic caused pouchitis. I was prescribed augmentin for a horrible sinus infection. Well, three days of amox, which didn't touch the infection and then 7 days of augmentin. Its been about three weeks and I am having complete watery stool with the overall yucks. Usually I can manage my pouch pretty well; I don't have an extensive pouchitis history. But cipro has worked for me in the past. Im just wondering if the augmentin threw me off, and do I need more antibiotics to correct it? Bummed....
Thanks
Kate

I'm with Rachel. Diarrhea that is long lasting following a course of antibiotics, seems fishy and suspicious of C. difficile. If it gets worse, and especially if you begin bleeding, you need to be tested for the C. diff. Start taking probiotics right away, particularly S. boulardii, and Pepto Bismol wouldn't hurt either. If this does not turn around in a few days, call the doctor!

Flagyl gets rid of my c.diff.

Augmentin is one of the antibiotics my GI suggested using for my next time for pouchitis. I get c.diff and can't take cipro for it as I got it once after taking cipro.

I have neuropathy so he doesn't want me to take Flagyl any more than I have to. One of the side effects of Flagyl can be neuropathy.

Sounds like we all can have some different side effects from antibiotics.

Also it is my understanding that you might get a false negative for c.diff until after you've been off of antibiotics for approximately 2 weeks.

I find it hard to tell the difference between cuffitis, c.diff and pouchitis but am getting better as my cuffitis is chronic.

In the meantime have you tried Imodium for the D?

Good evening all--
I spoke with the GI doc. She started me on flagyl, and I already feel better, at least in regards to the watery stool. I want to stay on top of the probitics. I bought Jarrow s. boullardii. How much should I take and how should I time the doses with the probiotics and flagyl. Got to get off the antibiotic vicious cycle! Thanks so much for the feedback!
