Who has had there surgery done at Mayo Clinic or Cleveland Clinic? I am planning to go to one of them and want to go to either Dr. Sima at Mayo or Dr. Remzi at Cleveland Clinic. But I have a concern - is it true that sometimes they allow resident surgeons to do the surgery? If so, I would feel uncomfortable with that - is there a way to refuse this and make sure the surgeon performs the surgery and not a resident surgeon?

I went to Cleveland Clinic, but in Florida. Had Dr. Wexner...he is nicknamed "God" by the nurses and around the world. Didn't go to Mayo Clinic because the Dr that misdiagnosed me went from University of Pennsylvania to Mayo Clinic. So took Mayo Clinic out of the running. Had a great outcome with J-Pouch and loving life pain-free.
Been to Both Cleveland Clinics and Mayo. If you want the very best (altho all 3 options are excellent)I would recommend Cleveland Clinic Ohio. Remzi is amazing but you cant go wrong with the other choices. My pouch is almost 29 years old and I had it done in Cleveland. I am happy with my decision and results. AS far as I know, the "fellows", (not "residents") assist your main surgeon of record, but your surgeon is there doing most of it and overseeing all of it.However, if this is a concern of yours I would definitely discuss it with the surgeon before you commit to him. YOu need to be comfortable about all details related to your decision. Keep us posted.
According to my limited knowledge base, if you have surgery at a teaching hospital, when you consent to admission and surgery, you also consent to treating practitioners under the attending physician's supervision. I don't think you can opt out of it. But, you are entitled to know who will be involved. It varies how well supervised these teams are. But, from what I've heard, Dr. Remzi is directly involved with each procedure, not wandering around between half a dozen ORs.
These are details to discuss when you have your consult.

If a surgeon has a solid reputation for getting excellent results, one of the conclusions you can draw is that his/her supervision of fellows is appropriate and effective. Fellows come and go over the years, and a good attending surgeon knows exactly how to manage that.
I had Dr David Larson do my 2-step surgerys at Mayo and they went very well. He performs the surgeys himself; it's definitely not mass production medicine here. I can highly recommend.

As a mom I was very impressed with the Cleveland Clinic = their concern and courtesy was something very unique - daughter had J pouch with Dr Bender at Hopkins 19 years ago - she is seeing the head of the colo-rectal surgeons now as they have detected cancer in a small portion of the j-pouch exterior - Hopkins set up a program that thankfully involves local medical services
