I just had an examination under anesthesia to verify that I have a small (size of the tip of a ball point pen) fistula from anal area (about 1" from rectum) to the vaginal area. My surgeon has said that that surgery may not be effective so he is suggesting that I just leave it alone as long as my symptoms are minimal. I had been diagnosed several times with bacterial vaginitis prior to the diagnosis of RVF, and I'm wondering if there is a concern with this being a long term incidence. I don't want surgery but I don't want to create a different major problem. Does anyone have any experience with leaving RVF alone even if it creates extra bacteria in the vaginal area? Thanks
