I finally can't take it anymore the pain and soreness around my stoma. I had my take down March of 2012. I thought I was past anymore issues. I was doing pretty good and now this pain around the stoma and shooting down to the opposite side of to my pelvic area is more then I can take. So I guess it is time to see what is going on. I also have massive diarrhea coming out. It is just like pure water. I have no idea what is going on. My thought is a hernia but I honestly don't know. Yesterday it was very hard and swollen and now it is just very very sore and painful.

Has anyone else had this issue? I am now scared to let it go. I don't want to end up back in a bag.

So sorry Granma,
It could very well be a hernia that partailly blocked things up in there and now released...I used to describe it a as a stuffed drain and then draino...I would run pure water...in my case it was a couple days of 1 and then a couple of the other...a real roller coaster...please, go to ER if you are suffering that badly...don't waste time worrrying if it is severe enough or not...and contact your doctor...surgeon or G.I. and let them know what is going on...
Hang in there and keep us posted

You are doing the right thing. The only thing I probably would have done different is call my doctor for an urgent care appointment, mostly because I hate, hate, hate the ER.

My experience is that if I need the ER, I am better off at urgent care because they bring me in straight to an ER bed, instead of having to sit around that awful place....I guess I have been around doctors and hospitals too much when I know the secret way into the ER!

I went to the ER because ours at U of M gets to the bottom of things before sending you home. So they gave me a CAT scan and everything looked great. No blockage or twisting or anything. So that was great. But they were not comfortable sending me home with the pain I had so they had me stay over night to watch me. I started with a liquid diet and then moved to a soft diet and no issues after I ate or even two hours later so they sent me home. They are thinking that I had some type of flu bug. I am not near as tender as I was, so I do think I am getting better. I finally got to eat more and I am feeling better. I am very exhausted but at least there is nothing wrong. If the pain or tenderness continues I have to follow up with my GI doctor. So I guess with taking Cipro they think my flu bug may have been worse since my immune system is stressed. What does everything? Does this sound right? I am so glad I went. I do feel better knowing that I don't have any issues with my pouch. Thanks everyone.

I've had something like what you are experiencing before. My stoma area gets firm underneath and I have several other areas in my abdomen that do. My surgeon said they are adhesions. I have a big one where my vertical incision is because he opened me up there 3 times. The initial surgery, during take down he had to cut out an abscess under there and the last time he had to open it up entirely again to fix an incisional hernia. That area likes the pain me a lot.

I've had a CT scan and small bowel study not too long after my surgeries and all is clear with me too. It's just something that comes and goes. I eat mostly lighter meals, like chicken and mashed potatoes. When we have steak I eat a portion the size of a deck of cards. I eat beef around once a week and then it's usually a cheese burger off our grill. I drink protein fruit/veggie smoothies and love Greek yogurt. I also eat too many graham crackers.

Thank you so much for the comforting support. I am glad I found someone who understands me. And now I feel even better knowing what it is. I thought it was all in my mind. But not the pain. Thank you so much for the help. I try and stay away from beef. (even though we raise our own beef cattle) It doesn't settle with me very well. I love chicken. Thank Goodness. I now feel so much better. It makes so much since now. I have had so many surgeries that I am sure I am full of adhesion's. That is probably what I am having the pain from.

Thanks so much

I know what you mean grandmaof1. I'm grandmaof2 with another due the end of July. Aren't they the greatest!

I had female surgeries before my j-pouch surgeries so had adhesions to start out with. My Surgeon noted them in the surgery report during my first surgery. The last time I saw him, a year after my take down, he asked me what I was doing for pain management and I told him I was taking Norco. He nodded his head like that was good.

I have an understanding Internist that manages my pain and prescribes Norco for my pain. It varies and some days I only need 2 pills and others I need 4 and am still in a lot of pain. On those days it is usually because I am having cuffitis or something else wrong.

Maybe your pain is not this intense and Tylenol is all you need to take. It wasn't enough for me and Tramadol wasn't strong enough either. Hopefully your primary care doctor will prescribe something for you to have on hand in case of emergencies so you will not need to go to the ER with your pain. As long as you are still having BM's you are probably fine. I kept thinking I was having partial blockages but it was those darn adhesions.

We buy a quarter of beef from our son-in-law's father but haven't gotten any in almost 3 years.

Take care Cool

I agree. I thought it was a blockage also. But so far so good. Yes, still having pain just not real bad. I have not taken anything for the pain. It comes quick and goes pretty quick also. But I remember back when I had female surgeries and was told the same thing about adhesion's. I am sure I have a boat load of adhesion's. I have had so many surgeries. I don't understand why I am so sick but I guess it happens. I am also another grandma. I should switch that to grandmaof2.

I sure feel much better knowing I am not alone and it all make since know that you explained it. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much I appreciate it Smiler I love this site. Everyone is so helpful.

I have heard of it and forget what it is called. My daughter-in-law has a 2 year degree in massage and even looked into it for me. Some physical therapists and massage therapists do it and I forget what it's called at the moment. I looked it up and didn't find anyone too close to me that did it. I try self massage to put force on them to break them up when I feel them in my abdomen. Sorry I can't remember what it's called.
