Hi everyone,
I have just had a C-Section two weeks ago (13th May to a gorgeous baby girl) and was wondering if someone could tell me how long it takes for J Pouch to go back to normal??!

I normally have to go to the bathroom about 8-10 times a day and now I am lucky if I go once a day (I would love if that was my normal bathroom routine, but its not & im starting to worry). Everytime I try to go to the bathroom my tummy really hurts, I think that is colic pains. Is this normal after c-section?!

This is my first C-Section, as I had a natural delivery with my son which was 10yrs ago and was a year and a half before I was diagnosed with Crohns and had all my Surgery.

It would be very much appreciated if someone could answer some of my questions as I am really confussed . Also how long does the swelling on my tummy take to go down?!

Sorry for all the questions, I cant ask my GP, Midwife or Health Visitor as they dont even have a clue on what a J pouch is and my consultant/surgeon who I normally phone when I have questions is on holiday.

Rhonda x

I have had two c sections prior to j pouch surgery and I can tell you your entire digestive system pretty much shuts down after each. If you can believe it, I sent almost 8 days before having a bm after my first surgery. I was on steroids which can also constipate you and my stomach looked like Mars from all the trapped air from the surgery. Be patient and walk if you are able to. Between any local anesthesia you had and the surgery basically disrupting your digestive system, it can take time for things to return to normal. Congratulations!

I had issues after my C section mostly because once cut again (they cut along my previous surgical scar, so mine wasn't one of those low transverse incisions like "regular" C section incisions are... it was about 8 inches long, from just under my belly button down). The reason I had issues was because I really need to harness my abdominal muscles to go to the bathroom now. Once cut again, I just couldn't "push" like normal, til the tenderness went away. I was miserable, and gas trapping, too. It got better, and things went back to normal for me within a week.

You see all those photos of people who look great after giving birth, but I stayed a puff ball for about two weeks, too. No one tells you this stuff!

Congrats on the little one!

It's normal, and so is the gas pain. Cut down on any pain meds as much as you can tolerate. That horrible burning pain where your incision is when you try to push WILL go away, but it takes awhile.

If you can get into a position (sorry, weird) where you are on the floor with your ass up in the air, like a downward dog type pose, that can release the gas a little sometimes. What really works is the plow position (you can google that) but that would be really painful on a fresh incision.

Hang in there!

My c-sections were before my jpouch surgery but it did take a while for my bowels to wake up.

Have you tried adding some Metamucil? 1 tsp 2x per day and see how you do.

And as others have said, reduce your pain meds as much as possible. Regular tylenol is okay, but try to get off any narcotics you're on.

Good luck. Hope it gets better soon. Congrats on the baby.
