Hi, I'm a young 45 year old male and I had my J-pouch created in 1998, The biggest worry I have had is abcesses which the last seems could be a fistula with a small 'communication' from the pouch to my back end, that has been treated with surgery and apart from some weeping all for that is OK. I lead an active lifestyle of running and full time work. My problem is I beleive pouchitis has got me again, while usually i have this once a year and a short dose of flagyl knocks it down ( a few days) this time it is hanging in there, the cramps are not there but frequency is up, I'm trying to do the two week flagyl thing (they make me feel ill) as I want to knock it on the head.
I'm then interested in some sort of on going prevention regime to keep all good, I have bad habits of a sweet tooth etc, I'm petrified of loosing my pouch and having to go back to the bag so any good advice would be well recieved. I guess it is time to look to complimentary methods to keep well. In the past I just avoided nuts and all was good.

Thank you, I'm new to forums but they are better than
Self diagnosis via the Internet. That is just too grim
I'm not getting success out of flagyl like I used to
As soon as I can get ontop of this I want to start a
Routine of probiotic etc
I thought the only option was jpouch or the damn bag
I'm learning that's not the case
I will finish this dose of flagyl but might add
Probiotics as of tomorrow
God I wish it was easy!! Thanks Buddy

Scott, Vanessa & Griff, thank you so much, I confess that I have been terrified that this was the end of the pouch because the flagyl wasnt working as well as it had, but you all have given me some light in the tunnel so to speak. I'm allergic to Penicillin but my investigations tell me that Cipro isnt a Penicillin base - if I can get remission I'm keen to try probiotics and I've heard that slippery elm is good. I'm no race horse but prior to this bout I was running 3.4 km per day and had a great lifestyle, now this bout isnt as painful as previous bouts and usually I'd have one a year - its just the nausea that flagyl gives me that knocks me presently. I still have 8 lomotols, 2 gastro stops and 2 panadine fortes with metamucil twice a day but with these drugs I'm pretty comfortable with the results.
I appreciate the support as it has been lonely since 1996
Cheers

Hi there,I was told by my surgeon that I had chronic pouchitis over 4 years ago, was prescribed cipro with no side effects, but after a couple of years I started to become immuned to cipro, so he started to alternate 3 weekly cycle with augamentin another antibiotic, this worked well for a while with no side effects. but I still suffer with pouchitis, seriously considering going back to a permanent ileostomy, one thing that is stopping me is that my immune system has been damaged using long term antibiotics, which could be serious if i get infected whilst in hospital. ???? good luck Bob
