Hello,
My husband had his total procto-colectomy last Wednesday (May 15) at Mayo in Minnesota. He had some difficulty with a partial blockage while in the hospital and had a red rubber tube in his stoma for a few days while there. He's home now and seems to be passing a good amount of stool but he is still fighting nausea and a lot of soreness at the stoma. I'm sure recovery is different for everyone but we're wondering when he can hope to start feeling better. Any input and support would be appreciated.
This site has been a great help!
Thank you

Is he taking any meds right now? A lot of painkillers can cause nausea, it might be a matter of just switching to a different one that he might tolerate better.

Soreness around the stoma is pretty standard for a few weeks after surgery in my opinion. If he had a blockage after surgery that probably put a bit more pressure on the peristomal skin and that will always cause aches and a little pain for a few days afterward. It is probably just compounding the normal post-op feelings.

Nine days post-op is not very much. Hate to say but the best thing to do is try to relax, rest, and eat protein. Time will pass and a week from now he will probably feel a big improvement. If the nausea is interfering with his ability to eat nutritious foods or stay hydrated then that should be sorted out ASAP.

Thank you so much for your quick response Liz, we really appreciate it!

Yes, he's taking 5 mg Oxycodone every 4 hours and 1000 mg Tylenol every 6 hours. It is a different feeling of nausea compared to what he felt when he had the blockage, so you're probably right.

We've been so focused on "stool thickening" foods to be sure it keeps passing through... we'll be sure he's eating enough protein as well and keep the fluids going.

Considering the procedure that was done, it's no surprise that he's still hurting. Resting and relaxing has never come naturally to him, hearing it from someone other than me helps. :-)

You can do all of the research possible prior to surgery, it still doesn't quite compare to the reality though.

Thanks so much for the support and peace of mind... it's just what he needed.

Oh yeah, that is PLENTY of opiates! Not surprised he's a little woozy at all. It's still early days but make sure his surgeon is in the loop about his painkiller use and you get a schedule for eventually weaning off.

Nothing compares to the reality Smiler Recovery from my second surgery has been remarkably similar to my first and I still feel surprised...

I hate having to rest too, I try to make myself feel productive by answering questions here while laying on the couch, haha.

Best of luck to both of you, keep posting if you need anything at all Smiler

I assume he has a loop ileo? Watch for the amount of stool and how liquid it is - loops tend to be prolific and dehydration can cause nausea too. Have him keep the fluid level up if he can, even through the nausea. Pedialyte is great for replacing fluids without extra sugar which tends to speed things up. In my experience the generic versions taste horrible, so go for the real thing. YOu can get powdered single serve multi flavor packs which might be easier (and cheaper) to manage. Just pour powder in a 16 oz bottle of water. Even now - 12 years post perm ileo - I take these on vacation, especially when traveling to warm places. I use one on the flight. I'll be in Disney at the end of June and I'll definitely have my Pedialyte with me!

I don't mean to scare you, but the Nausea will take a while to settle. You may have to manage it and keep it under control until you recover. Of course there are meds your surgeon can prescribe, but as you reduce your painkiller, nausea will start to get better too. It was the biggest abdominal surgery there is. Nausea is a big issue for many after these sorts of surgeries. I hope you are not one of them.
There are several ideas posted in a different post. Here’s one that may help.

Thanks so much for the replies! He's trying to wean off the Oxycodone in hopes of that helping. Pedialyte is a good tip also, he was drinking that prior to surgery... I think I'll stock up again, he seems to have a hard time getting enough liquids down, as that adds to the nausea.
I'll be posting another concern that has come up... :-/
Thanks again!
