I have been struggling with anus burn, pain and loose bowels, and since been on several regiments of Cipro, and Flagyl ever since with nothing completely solving the issue, biopsy showed not to be Pouchitis.
The last regiment of Flagyl was 500mg. 3X Daily, and last week my feet became numb and tingling and getting worse. Stopped Flagyl on May 14th, but still very numb feet?? Has anyone had this happen. If so how long for it to go away??
Thanks Capt.Larry

I have peripheral neuropathy, not from Flagyl and my neurologist gave me medication that made the tingling go away but the numbness isn't reversible for me Frowner He doesn't know what caused it either. My feet got gradually worse over 10+ years so I hope yours goes away. I am going to look into Mesalimine as I took a boat load of it over the years in the form of Asacol. Jan Dollar looked into it and found a couple of cases where it did cause it but right away, like your flagyl. So it probably wasn't Asacol. Too late now if it was.......

Good Luck!

Thanks for the responses: I still have tingling
and numbness at the same degree and have been off of Flagyl for 18 days but no relief yet. I also read that peripheral neuropathy is a side effect from Lomotil?? Which I take 6-8 per day. My Doctor said it was probably the Flagyl and so I am still on the Lomotil, as I alternate it with Imodium in attempt to control diarrhea. I'm currently taking no Antibiotics but struggling with Urges, Anus Pain, Diarrhea etc. with Doctor trying to determine next course of action to get it into remission. I need to start a new thread and get some information on what other options I may have short of a pouch takedown.

Have you tried using fiber to wean off of Imodium and lomotil? I like the clear clear gel caps filled with it so it's in pill like form and easier to swallow. Also we are to take it with less water than instructed. Still drink water all day but when you take the fiber drink less than the directions. I use to take 3-5 caps 3-4 times a day, with meals and before bed. 5 caps = 1 serving or 1 TBL. Good Luck

No I have not heard of that, I did use Metamucil for awhile at first but since have been on Imodium and Lomotil.
I am going to have to do something different since I stopped taking Lomotil and relied only on Imodium to see if my foot numbness and tingling would go away, and after 18 hours of no Lomotil only Imodium in its place I was in a diarrhea flare worse than I have been since my surgery last September.WOW it was the most painful anus I have ever had,so between pain pills, back on Lomotil, etc I'm getting it back in control, but had no idea the impact of Lomotil over the Imodium?? Well I go see the Doctor Monday so hopefully he will have some options short of going back to the bag.
Please give me more details on the gels please.
Thanks Capt.Larry

Metamucil or the generic equivalent is good for firming the stool as it sucks the water into it and bulks up the stool. It comes in the powder like form, the powder into the clear clear gel caps and there are metamucil wafers that many like to eat. Others prefer products like Benefiber instead.

My surgeon had me using both fiber and imodium together and I gradually cut back on them until I didn't need them anymore. I still used imodium when needed. I still need pain medicatiom that contains hydrocodone which slows things down.

If I were you I'd start out with the wafers or fiber filled gel caps. I would used 3 caps 3-4 times a day along with generic imodium. One service is 5 caps or 1 tbls if you want to mix it in water of juice. When you use it to bulk up your stool, like us, you should use less water than instructed at the time you take it. That doesn't mean you should decrease your intake of water during the day but take the amount you need to swallow the fiber is all that is needed at that time.

It is a more natural way of helping things along, per my Internist. I still don't have well formed stools as I find it easier to completely empty my pouch when things are looser.

I think I told you before but I have permanent neuropathy in both of my feet and the cause is unknown. As you can imagine I am less than thrilled to be taking Flagyl currently Frowner

If you do a word search on fiber there are some good past threads about this and you can see how other people dosed their fiber and what they used.

Other stool thickeners I like are bagels, marshmellows, bananas and potatoes.

I've tried all kinds of ointments and lotions and my favorite is calmoseptine. I first bought it at Walgreens, sometimes you need to ask for it at the Pharmacy. Now I order it 6 tubes at a time at Amazon as I still get it from time to time with my cuffitis and/or c.diff.

I hope you get over your butt burn soon.

Metamucil capsules are convenient, and are the lowest calorie way to consume Metamucil without artificial sweetener. If you have active diarrhea, though, they may not have time to dissolve and distribute in the stool as intended. If you see capsule-shaped stuff in the stool I'd recommend using the powder or wafers instead.

Thanks for the responses,My Doctor gave me Cholestyramine (Questran)which is a powder form and you take it like Psyllium but it gave me so much gas that I got bloated bad and had to stop it. So I am going to try your suggestions.
Also my numbness and tingling in my feet is still present, that is believe is from Flagyl, or Lomotil
but in time I trust it will go away.
Thanks Capt. Larry

Hi,

I am presently going through the same problem. Was just reconnected on november3 2014, After dealing with diversion pouchitis for 2.5 years. Anyhow things we're going well up into 15 days after surgery. The wound where  the ileostomy was started leaking and soon after opened up into a  enturcutanous fistulas. Well i myself had been on antibiotic for 14 months going from cipro flagyl , then to avelox to doxttabs. Then they decided to put picc line  to get it intervenorsly, stating that due to malabsorbastion it may work better, and with surgery coming and having no more vein access it was best. So was on flagy

N ciporo for about 3 months with addition of Vanco to help heal the enturcutanous fistulas.Day after doing ct scan they decided to remove picc line , one I was complaining of numbness in feet, and started feeling pain in armpit. The pain in armpit resulted into a blood clot, so glad it was removed but damage was already done. The numbness is bothersome and it's been 4 weeks and no improvement. I was told by dr. That it was peryphal neuropathy and should come back in time hopefully!

Not likely, since you are not currently taking it. It generally starts in the toes or fingers and resolves after you stop taking the Flagyl. It is a "pins and needles" sensation and possibly some numbness. The thigh is not terribly peripheral. Are you diabetic or been checked for diabetes recently? My husband used to get this sort of neuropathy that was attributed to his diabetes.
