In Sept I had my colon removed and the j pouch created. Then I had a reversal done in Jan, it failed due to leakage..had to go for emergency surgery 6 days later and they put the loop ileostomy back on. The surgeon wants to try to reverse it again because he says theres nothing wrong with the jpouch but the reason it leaked was because of scar tissue that had built up from the first surgery that caused a partial blockage and all the pressure built up and made it leak. I was just wondering if anyone had this ever happen to them and what the outcome of the second reversal was. I have also had countless complications from that reversal surgery and the subsequent emergency surgery that have me a little bit nervous.

Are they going to do a pouchogram to check for leaks first, or did your prior one seal up right away after the obstruction was gone?
A little x-ray with contrast would set your mind at ease. If your surgeon has not suggested, maybe you can inquire about it before you pull the trigger.

I had that x ray done before the first reversal and supposedly it didnt show any problems. so far i've only gotten a ct scan since talk of the second reversal.
As Jan suggested, you should have a pouchogram to check for leaks. I would not even agree to the reversal without this and I am shocked your surgeon is not requiring it after the issues you had with your first takedown. My understanding from having this surgery is this is standard procedure prior to takedown.
I had the pouchogram test done before the first reversal..this test is obviously not 100% ACCURATE or my first reversal wouldnt have ended in emergency surgery. I am wondering if there is anyone out there that has had a FAILURE for the first reversal and tried for a second one. I appreciate your comments but it seems like your reversals were successful. If there is anyone out there who had an UNSUCESSFUL reversal please message me
Well, actually I've never even had an ileostomy. But, I did have a leak that caused a large presacral abscess. It sealed up on it's own and I never needed diversion. I was very lucky and once the abscess pocket was drained and collapsed (I had a drain in for about a month), I had no further issues.

I had a second reversal. Lots of complications because of the mess inside my abdomen from the leak in my pouch, but 20 years later, here I am, still rocking the j-pouch. Best of luck to you!
I sent you a private message.
thank you for all the encouragement and private messsage. Ill let you know what happens
My first try failed as well, due to a leak. My doctor could not find where it was coming from, even after several pouchagrams. He finally tried injecting hydrogen peroxide and found it in a place one rarely sees one. He did a surgical repair, and my second take down was successful. I won't go into the rest of it, but at least the second one worked!
Good luck!
