Hi gang,

I'm sorry to keep asking a million questions, but I need all the advice I can get. Feeling much better today, I decided to walk to work (only about 2k), that, and it's an unseasonably mild 23 Celsius. For two weeks I've been sitting in bed, cabin fever is setting in, so I just had to go (Freddy, my hubby, took the car to work, we both work at the same hospital, so I decided to go pick up the car). Aside from the usual post op pain, I just took my time and made it, only having to stop once to rest. Of course, by the time I got there, I was drenched in sweat. I hopped in the car, opened the sun roof, opened the windows and went for a drive by the lake, picking Freddy up from work at 3. I get home, and suddenly feel a very bad sign, a warm, wet feeling. Sure enough, half my flange had fallen off, making a real mess! My home care nurse just put a new one on this morning, so my only conclusion is it was the sweating that caused it to come undone. BUT, if that's the case, I'm screwed! Most of you know my passion is cycling, I'll go for over 50K, sweating constantly (have to drink at least 4 litres of water to re-hydrate), but if the damn thing is going to fall off every time I sweat, how will I ever be able to peruse my passion? Please tell me there is something I can do to stop my flange from peeling off when I sweat, there must be something I can do, I definitely don't want to give up cycling, it's one of the few things in life that bring me pure joy. Please, if there is anything you've done to solve this, let me know, this disease as taken enough from me, I'll be damned if I let it stop me from cycling too, thanks,

Eric Big Grin

I'd say not to worry and that it's just something that happened. I don't know if you've seen these but they look like they would be very good for the very active bicycle rider.

You could also try applying an antiperspirant surrounding the flange to try to prevent sweat from oozing under the flange.

Also realize that this was your first big outing and you probably sweated a bit more than you normally would.

Dont panic yet my friend. Sometimes you get a bad flange. Sometimes the seal isn't strong enough - often when someone else helps put the flange on they don't really get all the spots to adhere. Or, maybe you have the wrong type of flange (wrong company) for your body. Get samples from all the companies and test them out - soak in a hot bath tub for an hour - see what happens. Go for a long ride and sweat up a storm and see what happens. You will find the right combination for you.

I absolutely love the Cymed Microskin product but can't use it because I need convexity, but you would love how flexible it is and how you barely notice it when it is on. They will send you a variety of samples - ask for one and two piece options.

I use coloplast, used to use convatec and both survived sweat, hot tubs, water slides, roller coasters, etc...

It takes a month or two to figure out what works for you, but once you do, you'll be amazed how quickly you get into a routine and start to forget you even have a bag. Really. It happens.

also eric.. make sure that you are not cleaning your skin with any lotiony kinds of soap. Try just using plain ole warm water and nothing else.

I am sure this was just a freak incident for you. I do all kinds of sweaty things with my ileo - running, swimming, hot baths, CYCLYING, and I have never ever had it fall off. I use coloplast sensura products. But I also do use sure seals when I'm sweating a lot. I put a link about them in a post solomin did about swimming with an ileo, think it was in general discussion.

You do what jill suggests, and what I mention about cleaning your skin. You will get this all figured out. I give you one month time, till you have a system worked out that allows you to never ever even think about your ileo, no matter what you do.
