Hi, it has been 29 years since I last had an ileostomy (and had a bag). Has any had experience swimming with one in a public pool? What about ocean with a strong current / waves?

Can it be done? How should one prepare / protect themselves so that they can go swimming, keep bag hidden and prevent it from breaking off / bursting?

Thanks in advance.

I had no trouble swimming at all. I've been in the water at Sauble Beach, and also went to Great Wolf Lodge. Just keep an eye on the adhesive. I did have it loosen on me at GWL but that was at the end of a day in the water and we were out of the pool at the time.

If you feel more comfortable, get an ostomy belt and or a some type of band - they sell neoprene ones online which support and cover the bag entirely.

No need to prevent yourself from doing anything! Enjoy.

I swim all the time with my ileostomy. No worries at all. Bags don't fall off or burst just because you are swimming.

You may want to check out Sure Seals. They cover the outer edges of your wafer to help keep it from deterirating. I use them when I'm swimming a lot, or with a lot of physical activiy, running,etc... things that I may be sweating a lot with.

Here's a link to the company that makes them. You can get a few samples from them also through their web page.
