Hello, I've been living with UC for 18 years(since I was 10), and finally(and reluctantly) had the j pouch surgery. It's been about a year since takedown now, and maybe a couple times every several weeks I notice blood in my stools. Maybe a total of 6-8 times in the past year. It usually only happens once, then not again for awhile. It is sometimes accompanied by a bloated feeling or a slight discomfort/cramping. I was treated as if it were pouchitius 4 or so months ago, and a flex-sig scope showed a "canker sore" type ulceration that was believed to be nothing, and likely the cause of my bleeding.

It seems to be a significant amount of blood, though nowhere near the amounts I've experienced with UC. Has anyone else experienced something like this? I keep thinking I should call the doctor, but the next day I'm fine, and don't have any more problems for several weeks. Thanks guys!

Came on tonight looking for answers to this same question. I'm experiencing the bleeding right now and frequent urges to go but not much comes out but only the feeling of bearing down. I feel inflammation bug time and like I said when I bear down in the toilet, blood dribbles out?

Any ideas Kathy?

I'm in so much pain and of course can't sleep, it is 1:30am here and have already gone about 13 times to the bathroom with blood every time tonight.

I have had the same issues but very little blood and during my sigmoid scope (I have pictures) the rectum that was left behind is diseased still w/UC. I have tried for months w/anucort suppositories and canasa to heal. I have been going to my GI monthly for a look see and it does look better but not completely healed. Still have the anal pain and do go less but it is still there. I am now starting proctofoam to see if that will help. I asked if it will ever heal and she couldn't give me an direct answer. Still feels like I have UC all over at times but with more problems!

Anyone out there have any suggestions as to the healing of the piece that is still diseased or do you just bite the bullet and go for the surgery to get rid of it?

Is it all of your rectum? I know from my 1st surgery to my 2 surgery my rectum became diseased and they had to remove it, attaching everything to a small stump. Then my takedown on the 3rd surgery.... Painful 2nd and 3rd surgeries, as far as recovery.

I was also told by my Dr that if any mucosa was left behind it can carry the disease and cause bleeding. I was told at my last colonoscopy that a strip of mucosa was left.

I guess overall I'm fortunate with my outcome. It's a little concerning about the disease spreading to the left behind remnants of colon/rectum, how common is this happening? Is it something that eventually happens to everyone? And if surgery is needed to remove what was left behind the first time, what kind of lifestyle are you left with? Is the j-pouch still functional without a rectal stump or do you have to go back to an ostemy bag? I don't think I could handle the bag again.
