Hi,
I have been having pain which is more than normal and have been passing whole pills. One is for blood pressure, thyroid, and water.... What is going on? This has just been this last week and now I am worried. I do not want a problem that would make me pouch free and stoma prone, I love this J pouch of mine and am afraid of not having one internal.???? Has anyone had this problem and if so what was done to help solve the problem?

Don't Panic Darlin (love that name!),
A lot of different processess could be involved here from what you are or are not eating: certain foods or liquids cause you to digest quicker (just fluids like coffee and juice, only eating fruits or veggies...), carbs like rice, bread and potatoes slow things down to allow those pills the time to breakdown and digest, meats are also slow digesters but all veggie/fruit meals can go in and out in under 1/2hr which may mean that those pills are coming out whole...next, if there is a flu or gastro bug in your system (and you may not know it as of yet) then things are moving along quicker than normal and ditto, pills pop out whole...then there could be the whole irritation or 'itis' issue...but if it is only in the pouch then the pills should be digested by then (digestion should occur in the stomach/small intestine)...call up your pharmacist for now and ask if you are allowed to cut or crush your pills explaining the digestive issues and your fear of being under medicated...he/she should be able to help you...
By the way, if there is blood it may mean irritation or and 'itis' so you may wish to call you doc if it lasts more than 3 days.

I've experienced this, but only when my GI put me back on Asacal after my takedown. I lasted just a few days, because the pill was coming out partially whole, jagidy... It was weird! Some pills, like mentioned above digest differently due to the outer coating it has.

Amazingly, off subject, but just as weird, I was self dialating about a week ago and a piece of plastic, stretchy, came out from down there! About the size of a quarter, not sure just how it got there, especially since as most Jpouchers do, I chew my food extremely well. Kinda through me for a loop!

I tyr to get as many chewable or liquid products.

Sounds like you have pouchitis or some other GI thing going on. Maybe a short course of antibiotics is all you need to put you back on course. Since it has been quite a while since your surgery, it seems that this is something new. You really need to absorb those pills, so you need to call your doctor and get advice. Like Sharon said, find out if you can crush them. I think most of the type you describe can, but it depends on whether they are time release or not.

Are you taking anything to reduce stomach acid, like antacids or proton pump inhibitors? If so, reducing your stomach acid significantly can sometimes affect the absorption of drugs. Make sure your doctor knows any and all supplements you take.

Good luck!
