Hi. I've experienced a few things that I know for sure cause severe, unbearable butt burn!

To help others, list some foods you've tried several times and can pin point them to your butt burn.

I've experienced with chocolate several times and it is one if the worst for causing the burn for me, ouch!

As with anything, this will vary considerably from person to person, so there is no universal list (though it would be easier if there was!). I think keeping a basic food journal is important if you want to track which foods are bothersome for you and adjust your diet accordingly. Also, as your system adjusts, you might find that foods that bothered you early after takedown are no problem 6 months or a year out. It's all trial and error.

I agree, I need to venture out, but I still have all these worries in the back of my head. When I was released from the hospital my surgeon said, go eat, everything! So I ate and ended up in the hospital for 3 weeks with the dreaded tube down the nose/throat and one in my bottom, draining everything out. I have never had a formed stool since my takedown, always diahrea!?

Good topic. I had some chocolate candy on Sunday night around 8 or so for dessert. Wow. I was in the bathroom every hour all night and barely slept. Ended up missing work on Monday. So I'm definitely not eating that for the next year. I haven't even tried tomato sauce yet because I just don't want to deal with it. I use Calmoseptine daily but it can only do so much for you.

If there is something you'd like to try or something that you have tried that might or has given you problems, just prepare the pathway for it. For instance, Mexican food, start by laying down a nice bed of chips to help absorb the heat. Also, pre-apply a butt burn ointment.

There are some foods that cause burn but that will not ever prevent me from eating something that I crave. Thai food can come out as gasoline lit on fire. But I know that the burn is transitory and it will go away. I'm pretty sure no one has ever died of butt burn.

If you want to eat something, eat it. Try a small amount and see how it works for you. If it causes too much grief, eliminate it for a while and then reintroduce it.

And here's the thing about our plumbing, things that never cause problems can actually fool us and react differently for no discernable reason at all. That's just the nature of the thing.

Kathy I admire you! Lol. I give you props for doing that, I think that's what happens to me but with sweets... I know it could potentially cause the burn, but dang it I crave it! Now tai, it sounds so good, especially since I only eat bland chicken, mac and cheese, and cereal, among other bland foods. HA, I'm not that brave yet! I don't even eat when we go to family get togethers or restaurants...

I will one day.. :-( :-)

34 years in now, and I cannot think of a food I haven't tried.  Yes, I've had burn many, many times but also wonder if I've somehow either built up a 'tolerance' to the burn and/or somehow got my insides to be less reactive.

I drink all the time -- wine & whisky > beer -- love chocolate & peanut butter, salads, etc., and am usually fine after.  When I get too liberal with hot sauce, yes I generally pay the price, but with calmo it is usually controllable and I just enjoy spicy foods too much to give them up.

So, experiment and see what happens.  But, IMO, don't let the pouch interfere with what makes you happy!

I salute Michael cause I tried for years to control different foods religiously, but I feel you can never totally eliminate the burn, only minimize.  All the minimizing schemes I tried turned me into a Slave of crappy foods.  I like good food and just decided good food/drink was going to be part of my life.  My solution was Pampers sensitive wipes and at home a shower hooked up to hand wand for rinsing when I'm not rushed.  For the shower rinse I don't even wipe, just dump the pouch in the toilet and climb in the shower.  I probably rinse off 4 times a day when home.  The rinse has pretty much eliminated the micro rips that occur in your bum hole from too much wiping, thus stopping the burn.  I live in New Mexico, and we love our Red and Green Chili hot!  Ha.

Some foods that are butt burners for me that haven't been mentioned are pepper and cranberry sauce.

Then there is the list of what I call "butt scrapers": crackers, the real crunchy kind,  if eating too many, nuts also if eating too many! They effectively end up giving butt burn. I use calmospetine and have for over 25 years. It helps as things start to slow down.
