Hello. Long story short. I had my j pouch built wrong in 2002..I am being seen by Cleveland Clinic and have my first appointment with Dr. Shen in April. I was going every half hour to an hour and in April started on Cipro and Flagyl with good effects. I started getting tingling in my extremeties and had to go off of them in November. I got bad again and started taking Rifaximin Saturday and since am back to going every half hour or so. I want to go back on Flagyl and Cipro to get my life back and take a chance that I wont have the side effects this time..Im dysfunctional at this point as the pouch is never evacuated and the urge and gas pain is awful. Should I take another shot on the Cipro and Flagyl. Is rifaxmin making me worse or hasnt it had a chance to work yet? Thanks for your help..-Joe

were you rotating from cipro and flagyl onto other antibiotics or taking them straight for 7 months with no respite?
I rotate between cipro/flagyl, xifaxin and augmentin, never on one more than a few weeks. I try to stay on xifaxin a bit longer as it is not systemically absorbed. Been rotating antibiotics for going on 18 years now.
If you experience those same side effects I would go off them. I have never had those side effects.

I did them together for the better part of 7 months..I did get off Flagyl first when I had the tingling, then after a flu shot I got more tingling and left the Cipro behind too. I just started Rifaximin after being on nothing for 2 months and after 2 days of RIfax I am back to where I was a year ago, going every few minutes believe it or not. I was thinking of doing Cipro and Flagyl for 2 weeks then just Cipro for 2 weeks, just Flagyl for 2 and then Rifaximin for 2..Rifaximin is more of a maintenance drug once your in remission it is my understanding? Advice?
Do you always take Cipro and Flagyl together and rifax and augmentin together or seperately?
I always take cipro alone with good results. Xufaxin makes my output increase so this could have the sane affect on you. I would consult your GI. Maybe you can try cipro alone if flagyl was giving you the tingling side effects or try augmentin in the rotation.

It's all about trial and error in what works for YOU. But I take cipro and flagyl together, xifaxin alone, then augmentin alone, in rotation and in exactly that sequence.
Both Flagyl and Cipro may have caused some tingling. But the Cipro tingling happened right after a flu and tetanus shot, so Im gonna convince myself I can take it again. Rifaxmin has me going every 15 minutes for 3 days..I was really hoping it would work so this is a bummer. I dont have a GI within 6 hours as I go to Cleveland from Syracuse. I am going to try Cipro 500 tomorrow. Never tried Augmentin. Hows that work side effect wise?
I do wonder if rifaximin would work better as a drug to maintain remission instead of as one trying to gain remission..

I have had no side effects with any of the antibiotics I have taken, except a yeast infection from staying on cipro too long and failing to rotate. Cipro photosensitizes the skin but that simply means you put sunblock on when you go out in the sun.
It would seem that the tolerance level of any antibiotic varies by the individual, and trial and error must be applied as to the type and dosage of antibiotic. Mine is high across the board which is a good thing as I have needed to treat pouchitis for 18 years. My pouchitis is kept in a "simmering" state with antibiotics; without them I would be dead meat.
Keflex and erythromycin are other ABs used to treat pouchitis as well as other bacterial ailments............
Dibell,
Just a note that the second time I tried xifaxin I did not have the constant diarrhea. Cipro alone just seems to work for me to the point of slowing my pouch output down to a max of four times within 24 hours. It's heaven as I feel like a person with a colon again but the constipation aggravates my stricture issues. I have backed down to 250 mg X 2 at present and will soon be trying to get off antibiotics for a month or so reprieve if I can. As CT mentioned it is a lot if trial and error to get you to a functioning point.
