Yes, it was food poisoning from a prepared salad and I got very dehydrated as well. It hits you much harder when you have a J pouch than it does others. Because of the dehydration you feel really crappy. It's good that you are in the hospital because they can IV you with nutrients/electrolytes, otherwise you would not keep fluids down and it would get worse. I eventually passed out, the 1st of 2 occasions in the last 10 years I passed out from being dehydrated. I hit the floor Hilary Clinton-style but no concussion.

Sounds like norovirus. It comes on fast and strong. The hospital is the best place for you. Just make sure everyone is washing their hands and not spreading more germs to you. Jan Dollar just posted that alcohol-based hand sanitizers don't work on norovirus. One has to wash their hands with soap and water for 20 seconds. Also try to keep your hands away from your face.

I was just in the hospital ER and the doctor came in and shook my hand. He did not wash his hands beforehand or as he was leaving. I had two separate IV's and both times the person doing the procedure did so without gloves. I guess they missed that lecture.

I never felt that stomach ailments hit me any harder because I had a j-pouch. I think in my case I get through them much faster if they do hit. I've never become dehydrated because of it either (that I know of).

I hope you feel much better very soon.

It is not the stomach ailment itself that dehydrates you, it is the vomiting and the diarrhea. You lose all those fluids and the J Pouch, unlike the colon which preceded it, simply lacks the size and the power to ever fully assume the colon's function of replenishing bodily fluids via re-absorption. It is simple physics applied to the human body. Take a look at a picture of a colon and a picture of a J Pouch. It's comparing a 10 cylinder engine to a 4 in terms of water re-absorption capabilities. My entire 20 years with a J pouch it has been obvious to me that I dehydrate much more quickly, even in the best of circumstances, than I did with a colon. In the worst of circumstances, things can get very ugly.

Being in the hospital is the right place and you will get better faster with that IV in your arm.
