I am 2-weeks post op from my 2nd surgery to form j-pouch and to complete total colectomy and I have loop ilestomony.

I've had excellent recovery but the last 4-5 days I've been experienceing frequent trips to bathroom for discharge from anus of liquid maroon in color discharge (prob 6-8 x 's a day)as well as normal output from ilestomy.

Is this normal? Or should I be concerned?

My surgeon says it's normal but I think this often is not normal.

UC 2007

Pretty much as normal as it gets...there will be a bit of discharge in the begining...then it tapers off and slows down...finally it stops...as long as the discharge is brownish and not red then it is just mucous and old blood...Is there a fever? Pain? Puss? If there is no 'unusual' tenderness, no blood or fever then just allow it to dry up on its own. It will stop in a while.

Dark red stool is indicative of either breaking down of clotted blood that is nearby, or bleeding further upstream. If this continues at the same frequency, you will need to be examined. It is possible you have a "bleeder" in there that needs to be cauterized. Also, this could be cuffitis (inflammation of the retained rectal cuff), which may need topical treatment. So, keep monitoring this and call your surgeon back if it doesn't begin to deminish in a day or two. Also, if you develop symptoms of rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, dizziness, paleness, you may need a transfusion.
