Hi all,

I have a somewhat off topic issue that I need some fellow Jpoucher's advice on.-->While my pouch has been functioning pretty well lately, Ive been dealing with an annoying cold-like sickness. I've had yellow mucus drainage from my nose which is not my normal mucus color, and also I've had some bad sinus pressure/headaches for about a week now. I thought it was most likely a cold, yet it hasn't really improved at all and colds generally go away a lot faster. I think I might have a sinus infection since I dont get allergies. Anyway, my mom has similar symptoms and her primary care doctor prescribed her Cephalexin which is generic for Keflex. She wants me to take it since I can't get in to see a primary care doc for several weeks and I really just need to take something to get rid of whatever this possible infection is.

I'm wondering if anyone here knows whether us pouchers can safely take keflex? Also I'm curious if anyone here has taken the antibiotic before for something like a sinus infection and if so, how effective it is? Im curious about these questions since I know the drug can cause bad diarrhea and irritate the gastrointestinal tract which is something that I really do not feel like doing!

Thank you!

You should never take someone else's prescription. First of all, If she has taken part of it, you might not have enough for a full course. Second, it may or may not be the best choice for what you have. Why would you not be able to see your doctor for several weeks? If you think you have an infection, you should get an urgent appointment.

A sinus infection may or may not respond to oral antibiotics. That said, my j-poucher has taken a ton of Keflex, both for URI's and for pouchitis. He has also had three sinus surgeries to drain sinuses that were too filled to respond to antibiotics. So again, if you think you have a bacterial infection, you really need to see a doctor.

I recently have been having gas, flatulence. I had pouchitis in August of 2012 and really have not had the same bowel movements since. I have not felt the same either. The Cipro completely constipated me terribly and I think that is what did me in. I now have hemmroids on the outside the GI tells me. They bleed sometimes and now this gas....and bloating. This has been going on for about 3 weeks.I am totally confused on what to eat and/or do. Too new to me.

Re: the sinus infection

I don't get it that you cannot see a primary doctor for several weeks if you think you have a sinus infection. You should be able to get an urgent care appointment, even if it is not with your regular doctor, within a day or two. These sorts of things are not just a cold, unless you don't have the symptoms. You really don't know if Keflex is the right antibiotic for your problem.

I would try calling back and asking for an urgent care appointment.

Litmatla: have you tried using probiotics to get your gut back on track?
