I had my takedown this past May. I have basically been doing very well- eating what I like, going 6-8 times a day, no urgency, etc. I had pouchitis at the end of August, and then a month or so ago I started having those symptoms again (urgency, fever, frequency, pouch pain.) I took another round of Cipro, because my surgeon had called in enough refills that if I needed them I could just go get them, he said. Anyway, it's been a couple weeks since finishing the antibiotic (which made the symptoms disappear), and today I woke up with a very sore pain in my lower left abdomen and further down, sort of in my anus but on the left side only. I'm really worried- I have no idea what this is. It gets worse when I put pressure on my backside (sitting, laying down, etc.), but also hurts more when I just move. I don't even know who to call; I haven't been to see my GI yet since surgery, and my surgeon is a 2 hour drive away. What is happening inside of me?!

I agree with Kathy. If it has been so long since seeing your GI that you cannot make an appointment, either call your primary doctor for an urgent referral, or call your surgeon and see what he recommends. He may just say to go to the ER so they can do a scan and see what is going on. Plus, you will need routine screening bloodwork to help diagnose this. They always have a GI and a surgeon on call in the ER. It may not be a colorectal surgeon, but he can get tests done and a basic exam going to figure it out. This is why it is a good idea to call your primary or surgeon, they can contact the ER and get orders started. Oh yeah, be sure to take your temperature. If you have a fever, it is an important sign.

Good luck,

Thank you guys for your responses. The soreness/pain subsided as the day went on; by the afternoon it was gone completely. I didn't even take anything for it... Called my GI and then remembered that his office is closed on Fridays, so I'll call first thing Monday. I was worried about the possibility of another abscess, but this felt different than the other two I have had, and there was no fever. Sitting here right now I feel perfectly fine. So weird!! I guess I'll just see how the weekend goes...
