Why are things like aleve and other nsaids bad for Kpouchers? I used to take them all the time when I played a lot of sports and I had a Kpouch then.

They irritate the pouch and it's almost like bringing back UC again. I'm sure not in all people, but I know I can't take them.
Dpol,
I have been on them regularly for the last 4-5yrs (Advil, naproxin and prescription types when needed)...no problems with the pouch. The only problem is that my GP is scared that they will effect my kidneys so he took me off them last week NSAIDs (paradoxal...he prefers to see me adicted to narcotics than to NSAIDs!)

Hey sharon, I agree with your doc on the narcotics over nsaids. lol
NSAIDS made me bleed so much worse with Ulcerative Colitis. The fact I still have bleeding from the rectal cuff would mean it's still a no-no now. Not a fan that's for sure. What they can do to your stomach long term can't be a good thing. But hey, some people can't take narcotics so, they have their place.

I would be happier with a magic wand and no pain but obviously that is not going to happen so I will keep this up...I am very anti-narcotic for myself...spent my teen years controling my disease with codine in order to go to school and I hated it...made me fuzzy. But it did slow down the bowels...I lived on a coctail of lomotil, gravol and codine...lousy way to spend your highschool years..now I would do anything to stay away from them.

NSAIDs, Vioxx, and Celebrex are upsetting to the GI tract. I can't take these on a regular basis, very rarely yes, but they irritate my GI tract. It took years for the GI doctors to figure this out, I used to take ibuprofen daily before I figured out it was irritating my GI tract. I do take one aspirin a day, as I am 60 years old which I've had no trouble with.
When I used to have UC and a period, I would get severe mentrual cramps and take lots of Ibuprofen for the pain. Well, I always thought that my colitis got so much worse during my period but it actually was the NSAID's that was the culprit. I do take an occasional one when I have back or joint pain and it seems that one or two will do no harm to a pouch. Just be sure you don't overdue it.
Hey Sharon, I do feel a bit fuzzy too, and would rather not have to take anything, but they are helping me slow the bowel down so I have to use them at the moment. I can understand from what you say why you'd be sick of having to use them though. I got lucky in high school, as I hadn't got to the sick stage yet... take me back there anytime time machine. lol
