I have had my j-pouch for at least five years, but just recently (within the last four months)I have had excessive gas and more bloating than I used to have. I have tried the over the counter products for gas, but nothing seems to help. The only change in my life except the usual stressors has been a 4-mile walking regiment that I started last spring. I have my colonoscopy in the next few weeks, and I'm uptight about this. Thanks. Kris

Same here, I never knew how annoying gas could be until I received my pouch. I'm thinking about taking a huge dose of Beano tonight. I doubt it will work, but at this point I have nothing to lose and everything to gain, especially my sleep! Mad

Do you think it could be pouchitis? I am only 5 months post-takedown, so obviously not a jpouch expert, but I did have a bout of pouchitis about 2 months ago. My symptoms included excessive gas which caused bloating, and some urgency, as well as quite a few more trips to the bathroom than I had been having up until then.

If it turns out not to be pouchitis, I would recommend Beano as well. It definitely helps me out when I'm having an extra gassy day (when I remember to actually take it before eating, that is.)

I have had my j-pouch now for 10years and I'm sick of the Excessive gas!! I was put on a Low FODMAP for 2yrs now and don't follow the diet fully. I try!! Lately it's been literally all day for 2wks now. I lost my medication for my other health issues for 1.5wks and it has been non stop gas and bloat, gurgling and nausea for the whole time!!  I use Fresh or organic powdered ginger for my tummy/sm bowel and yogurt with real cultures and could on!y eat small meals but it only helps for 1-2hrs!! So, I bought some gas x and finally have relief!!! But I don't want to live with this gas!!! And having to live with taking the gas x 4 times a day!! Anyone know of an easy cure or something I can take that is natural for excessive gas? Thanks Rosie

You might try an elimination diet.  I find that things like dairy cause me to become gassy.  I also use Beano or Lactaid pills  (actually the fake stuff from Walgreen) if I know I'm going to eat something that could possibly cause me gas. That usually helps prevent the unwanted and painful tummy issues.

You asked for other natural cures for gas.  I have used Peppermint tea with success.  I have also had success with mixing powdered ginger with water and drinking that.  To be honest though, I am more apt to pop a Gas-x to get rid of the awful feeling faster or take a Beano to prevent it in the first place.

If it continues to be a major issue, I'd also have a GI check you for pouchitis or sibo.

Hope this gives you a few more ideas to try.

I'm battling the gas issue as well. I have tried various things although you have to constantly take them. Here's some that is worth trying, most of these are taken 15-30min before the meal except the teas

1. Peppermint tea (i think this irritated my stomach)

2. Fennel tea (caused restless legs)

3. Enteric coated peppermint oil

4. Oregano oil

5. Triphala ayurvedic powder

6. Papaya

7. Lactoferrin

8. Cucumber and Celery fresh juice
