I had my rectum removed last year due to rectal cancer,7 years before that I had a total colectomy due to FAP. Here lately I have been having really bad pressure, like I need to have a bowel movement bad,Its not always painful but it does happen when the urge to go is severe, Im not sure why I am all of a sudden having these, Is it maybe because I am backed up somehow? or do I have a partial blockage maybe? Whatever it is It is really aggravating me,I notice when I get nervous about something I feel the need to have a bowel movement. It is like my rectum is still very much there and something needs to come out, Please help me with this, I feel silly about this so i am embarrassed to call my doctor over this, thank you for any and all advice, becky

I too sometimes have the urge to have a bowel movement even though I have had my rectum removed and sewn up with a barbie butt. My doctor said it is nerve pain and that if it got really bad he would put me on something like Lyrica which I believe is non-narcotic. I would definitely discuss it with your doctor especially if it seems to be getting worse or more painful. I am pretty sure it has to do with the nerves, not a blockage. With a blockage you would be experiencing G.I. symptoms such as vomitting, no output, gastric pain etc. Good luck and don't be embarrassed to talk to the doctors, they have heard of everything before and are trained to respond in a professional manner.

Becky,
After 33yrs with the area sewn up I still feel pressure and phantom pains...it never totally goes away but it happens less and less often...stress will give you those pains (the natural fight or flight reaction means that the body was programmed to 'let go' before either reaction and that means emptying the bowels)...So stress stimulates it...your brain is basically telling your guts to empty out...but there is always the possibility that something else is going on down there..like an abscess so don't feel silly talking to your doc about it...sometimes you need it to be checked out.
You can also do biofeedback for the pain if it is 'nothing'.
They teach you how to ignore your brain's signals and to reprogram the reaction or at least your nerves reactions to it...
And when my pouch is full (K pouch) I still feel pressure down there...just my stuid brain telling me that I have to go empty it out. Although I never reprogramed it completely I no longer painic when I feel the pressure.
