Hi All,

I am 3 weeks out from step 1 surgery and am having a lot of irritation around the stoma. I have used the powder, the wipes, latex skin cement, three types of seals, domeboro's soaks. I am not having ANY success in getting a good seal allowing the skin to heal. I was wondering if anyone has used a Hydrocolloid dressing? If so was it worth it? Please advise.

I used one every time I had to tape my tube into my k pouch and it worked great but I do not know if it can work with an ileo...If you are using a flang and belt it might but if you are cementing it to your skin then I do not know but it may just be worth your try...let us know if you succeed.

I feel your pain. I am 3 months out of having j-pouch removed. have only used moldables by Convatec and Hollister but they are not holding up. I am facing trying to use the Coloplast that I have to cut and I am clueless. Some folks say cut up against the stoma others say leave 1/8 inch. Then there are the barrier rings and all the different ways to use them it is too much. I feel so helpless and depressed, but enough about me.

I did have a ET nurse use DueoDERM extra thin dressing on the area. First I crusted then cut out a hole for the stoma and them put on wafer with paste. the problem was it went right back to the redness. I have a stoma waist level so not sure.

Hopefully someone else will chime in.

To help the skin heal around your stoma try this: Let a bottle of plain, non flavored Mylanta (or generic) stand upright over night. The next a.m. Pour off as much of the clear liquid as you can. Saturate a cotton ball with the thick, white residue and daub it on your dry skin all around your stoma. Use a hair dryer on low to dry the area and then gently brush off any loose powder with the back of your hand or with a make-up brush. Repeat at least once. Then use a product like Stomahesive Paste to get a good seal of your wafer. Secure your wafer/appliance to your belly and use your warm hand/fingers to help it seal. This process + using skin bond gave me at least 7 days of wear and clear skin around my stoma. Talk to an ET nurse for other ideas. Best wishes!

Hi All,

Thank you for your help. The good news is that my skin appears to be healing. I changed eakin seal brands, have been changing daily, doing a domeboro's soaks AND began using paste. So far so good. Due to my skin being so difficult my surgeon is opting to move up the pouchogram and checking to see if I am good for my take down. Although I am anxious about having another surgery I am looking forward to being semi normal again.
