Hello! I have read some of the threads regarding lactulose. I was just prescribed that with probiotics. The reasoning is so I can stop taking antibiotics. I understand the function of lactulose, however I am curious about the side effects. I had read about and been warned by my Dr about it having the laxative effect. Has anyone had any issues with extra gas etc?

I had a bowel obstruction a little over a year ago and lost about 1/3 of my small intestine. I was on TPN and had an ostomy for 5 months. Now I am back to the pouch, back to work, etc but I have more gas than I ever had before. I hope the lactulose doesn' make it worse. Between the pouchitis and the gas, I don't know what is worse. I really don't want to get rid of my pouch, I'm only 28 and have a lot to cross off my bucket list ( I realize an ostomy doesn't limit that much).

Any ideas? I need some help!! It is starting to take a toll on me mentally and emotionally!

It does have a mild laxative effect so maybe take a tblspn a day instead of 1-2 3x a day like it can be prescribed. I am not sure if the laxative effect is forever or after the good bacteria forms it gets better. I plan on asking this tomorrow when I see Shen. I cut back the dosage and had less issues but it has gotten rid of about 90% of my gas.

Well it has helped me a lot. Since the stool turns acidic, the job of the stuff it helps move things along. Food seems to hang out in my small intestine and I get sick. I also had most of my stomach removed so digestion is a big issue and I keep forming small bowel bacteria there because of the stomach surgery and now the bowel removal. Even though I have a BCIR I don't want to be that runny. I am taking 250mg of cipro in the evening and the Luctolose in the morning. I just take a swig of the stuff. Once I feel everything move through me I empty then go to work. I don't seem to be that runny anymore like I was the first week I was on it. Things calmed down a lot. Every once in awhile I can try to get off the antibiotics but so far no dice. I hope eventually with eating a clean diet Shen said NO SUGAR. I can get better.

All I have to report so far!

Thank you so much Vanessavy. You information has really helped me out. I take 500mg Cipro morning and night and I didn't realize you can't take Lopermide with it, which I was doing. So I switched my medicine around. Seems to help a little. But the Cipro is killing my joints. Some days are fine and others are killers. I think I might also switch antibiotics and ask about what you are taking. Again, thank you so much. My small intestine is stretched as far as it can go that is why I have very little of my rectum. She had no choice.

Again, thank you so much for all the information.

I have only taken antibiotics 3 times last week so. I am also following the SCD diet since I am battling small bowel bacteria overgrowth, pouch is fine, it is my stomach that is causing it all. I also read grapefruit seed extract (put few drops in water) and capsules of peppermint oil help fight it. Maybe the same for pouchitis. Anyway. I am determined with this to get my guts in order!

Hi,

I've had my j pouch since 5/14 & many things have been tried. I don't know what lactulose is but I have controlled gas with probiotics that are for my blood type by dr. Dadamo & & liquid probiotic from my ND. Also I swear by 1/2 tsp of pysillum husk powder & 1/2 tsp of slippery elm powder before you eat or when you have loose stools. Originally you might experience gas but as you take every day the stools form, digestion slows down & then gas disappears. I also never drink anything carbonated & limit gassy vegetables.
