Hello. I am currently dealing with pouchitis or hopefully the end of it. I have been on antibiotics for about 3 months now and the doctor wants me to start on the probiotic VSL#3. It wasn't covered under insurance so I need to find it cheaper online but before I buy does anyone know the proper dosage for VSL for maintaining remission of pouchitis?

I didn't have much luck finding it cheaper online. I use four double-strength (DS) packets/day, which is 3600 billion CFUs (colony forming units)/day. It's expensive. Most people use less - 1-2 double-strength packets daily.

The DS is only available with a prescription. If you prefer to use the non-prescription strength, I'd suggest 2-4 packets daily, or you could use a bunch of the capsules to get the same # of CFUs.

Thank you everyone for the advice. I'll remember that and also check into the insurance. Mine will be changing here soon so maybe they will.

As for the pouchitis before takedown. I agree and my GI had talked about that with me. I suppose it would be considered diversion colitis (diversionary pouchitis) but they are simply calling it pouchitis and want to treat it that way. The antibiotics have helped so far and the VSL is just their next step.

Thanks again!
