Plus, for added information, this is not in regard to getting a new pouch, but dealing with the complication of new found cancer in a two decade old pouch. I am not even sure that having a j-pouch expert is the most important thing here, but a cancer expert. Cleveland Clinic did not develop the j-pouch, but they are a top center for them and their maintenance.

I had ileostomy at Hopkins and it was laproscopic with a small additional open (4" just above pubic area).

This option depends on everyone's unique circumstances according to my surgeon

Freedom - my daughter had ileostomy at Hopkins - the old hospital - 2nd worse case of UC that the retired head of GI had ever seen - was your Doctor, Doctor Schuster?? and the surgeon was from Bethesda who operated on special cases on Wednedsays at Hopkins. - everyone she saw wanted complete removal - except these two - and it lasted 20 years. The surgeon who operated recently at Hopkins, studied a year at Cleveland Clinic.

Hopkins is a fine hospital, about 20 minutes from my house. I know it well and hold it in high regard. It's not the best in the world at everything, though - not by a long shot. Also, the hospital doesn't really treat your illness - the doctor does. I have occasionally considered a trip to Cleveland...

There are a few legitimate hospital ratings - at Hopkins the have a banner that says #1. and I am sure they are in specific fields - as in my family we were interested in true ratings for cancer and gastroenterology. I believe Sloan Kettering for Cancer. I know that location was a decision maker for us. If it were closer I would go to Cleveland Clinic the way they treated families impressed me especially during hard times. Two of the most unique Doctors were at Hopkins one a crisis Doctor who had a big decision to make and the other 17 hrs of surgery and can walk.
