Hi everyone,

I was diagnosed with insulin resistance and put on Metformin. I have Crohn's and a J-Pouch. I am having a flare after being on the Metformin for 3 months.

I was wondering does/did anyone else on here take Metformin and did it make your digestive system worse. If so did you switch to a different drug.

I have put a call into the doctor but sometimes it takes a few days for him to get back to me and I just wanted to see if anyone else had trouble with Metformin.

Thanks, KangaRoe

I took it for a year or two, didn't have any issues, but I don't have Crohn's. My husband has been on it for a long time and also has UC, no issues with the metformin. There really isn't anything comparable to metformin, as the other drugs can cause hypoglycemia and weight gain. Metformin works differently to improve insulin resistance and does not cause weight gain. But, GI side effects are the most common ones. They usually subside over time though. Are you sure it is a Crohn's flare and not just the usual side effect of diarrhea and GI upset?

If it is just the side effect, you might be able to get past this by reducing the dose and increasing it gradually.

Thanks Jan,

That is good to know others have taken it with no ill effects to the illness. I do get flares so this could be just one of my flares or pouchitis and not have anything to do with the Metformin.

When you start a new non-IBD medication it's hare to seperate side effects of the meds from the illness itself.
