Absolutely! It is connected to the colon, like a finger. Removing your entire colon without the appendix would be like trying to cut off your hand without removing the fingers.
This is a very common question ansd it never ceases to amaze me that the surgeons do not mention it...
I was amazed when I went to a new GI after my surgeries and after he reviewed my medical history he asked me "So, you still have your appendix, though?" Um, no, that was removed with my colon. After that he asked me to research a treatment plan and let him know what I found out. I did do research- to find another GI!
So funny this was asked today. I just found out from my PCP that my appendix was removed during my colectomy. I agree...the surgeons really should relay this to patients!
