Hey fellas,
I just had part 2 of a 3 part J Pouch surgery on Tuesday (it's Saturday and it's the first day home.) They removed my rectum and created the J Pouch in this step. My biggest concern was the whole impotence deal. Well, I did have an erection in the hospital a couple days after surgery (with a catheter still in) at night time (kind of like morning wood). I was so happy this happened cause I figured my number one concern was just put to rest. Well, I'm out of the hospital (it's only been 4 days since surgery) and I can't get an erection. I know I'm probably jumping the gun, but I really want to know if I should start panicking yet. I just popped on some porn to see what would happen and you could hear crickets, nothing. Now I'm super scared. How long can I expect things to return to normal? Should it be immediately, or does it take time. I'm only 30 years old, married, with one child (the wife and I really want a 2nd) and this would be devastating. Really like to hear people that maybe had the same problem, but then had an erection after time had passed. Thanks guys!

I think it is very likely that this is temporary. One, it is way too early for you to panic. It takes time for the swelling to diminish and the nerve trauma to reverse. Two, the fact that you had an erection early post op means all the nerves are intact. You could easily had swelling occur around the nerves during that post op period.

So, give it a few months at least. If you are still in the same state, then seek a referral to a urologist. I bet you won't need that referral.

Don't let your fears run away with you.

I had my step 1 of two surgeries last week and came home this
past Monday. Things have woken back up completely for me I can say.
Not having any problems whatsoever which is a big relief as my
doc had a long discussion with me regarding this before surgery.

I was asked to participate in a paper she's writing regarding
this type of surgery and impact on sexual function. So far everything
has been all good.

This isn't the case always for recovery. It depends on the operation, the age of the Jpouch recepient, and how well it was before the operation. I have had my J pouch since 2008, from having UC. It has been a traumatic event not being able to get a boner at a moments notice as before. Whether it is nerve damage or not, I am not sure, but what I do know is that with medical help like a pill, and with testosterone supplements, I am working fine now. However, being in my late 40's, other factors get included in there, so it is not all j pouch maybe, but I cannot verify that with my only experience. My main point here is that while I am not what I used to be, I am most grateful on not having UC, and since I can plan my boners and still get one without "all medical help, and my main message is not to be discouraged for guys my age...talk to your doctors and urolisgistsSmiler

Agree about talking to Doctor. Surgeon said to see urologist. Did not have problems after jpouch 20 years ago but recently has complete colon and tail bone removal I knew that cancer is more prevalent when UC involved. Never told about these side conditions. But lucky they saved rectum 20 years ago and NO regrets as there had been a 95% push to remove rectum then. Finding a good urologist is now the MAJOR problem. Live in Maryland
