anyone else on long term antibiotic for pouchitis( have antibioic dependent pouchitis like me) ever faced with issue of having problem that requires another antibiotic? issue in my case sinis condition..

i am on augmentin now for 6 months best i ever did with pouch in 6 pouchitis years..but my other dr. wants me to go on azithromycin(good only for upper respitory bugs..

the dilema i have is..

if i go on both i set myself up for possible c-diff(killing off to many good bugs)

if i go off augmentin i am more than likely to have my pouchitis flare up.. and fearful it will not work if i stop it and then start again

need to get rid of cough i have and some congestion that has not responded to the regular things i used and am trying a steroid pak dr. gave me that tapers in 6 days(sort of shock and awe) but on day 5 of doing this i do not think it will work..

Hi Rebecca,

I just took Augmentin for a sinus upper respiratory infection plus Fluxonase, (steroid) nasal spray and it worked really well. Ask your Dr. if you could just do the Augmentin and prednisone and see if that works without introducing another antibiotic. I also did some home remedies such as inhaling eucalyptus oil on a tissue and using a netty pot with warm water and sea salt. I was better in a day and a half.

How about waiting on the azithromycin until after sputum culture/sensitivity are in? That way you make sure you are on the right antibiotic for your URI. There really is no such thing as an antibiotic for only respiratory bacteria.

You should be OK stopping and resuming the augmentin later. I would imagine that if the augmentin was good for your URI, you would not have your current infection.

thanks for quick responses..the augmentin i take for my pouchitis obviously does not work for my upper respirtory issue because as jan said i would not have it..but even with that i am holding off on second antibiotic ..will see how i am tomorrow.. called dr. and told him i am not taking second antibiotic and he said ok..i will finish steroid pak and continue with steroid spray i have..
thanks again..you kind of confirmed my gut feeling of not taking both..
