My skin around my stoma hurts so bad! It stings when I put the stoma paste the pain is like breathtaking also using the powder which is new. It keeps me up at night. I change my bag everyday sometimes twice a day which by the way I shouldnt be doing because I only get 20 bags per month. any remedys?? I let it dry pretty good when I clean it. I've tried the eakin seals. I have no more. So ?? any help please.

I would talk with a stoma/wound nurse that specialize in this.
After both my surgeries I had weeping skin around the stoma. The nurse showed me how to make a crust around the skin using powder and skin barrier wipes. Powder the area, then dab over it with barrier wipe, and repeat until a crust forms. Then use an eakin seal. After few weeks I was up to 4 day wear time.
I also got many samples from different ostomy companies and it took awhile to find the right system. Its just something we all have to go through.
Good luck

The system/procedure you are using definitely is not working. So right away get yourself to a stoma nurse. He/she can help you try some other things. You may need a convex wafer. You may have allergies to the wafer you are using. You may not be drying enough before applying. There are so very many things that could be attributing to your problems. So please get yourself to an ostomy nurse first thing on monday before your skin gets worse.
also call and get samples from other ostomy companies. Also, if you end up needing additional supplies your surgeon can ammend the script usually.

My insurance wont cover ostomy nurse I've used these bags for a whole year wiith no problem then all of a sudden i'm having these problems. i'm statrting to notice it happens after I eat dinner it gets worse.
winnie- Thank you!! I'm gonna try it. I've already got lots of samples but noticed the ones from convatec cut to fit work the best for me. also I do like the eakin seals. the paste and powder burns like you wouldnt believe. I might need to ask my doctor for some pain meds to at least get through the healing process of the skin when I use the powder. is it just me or is it painful using the powder and paste?? it sends my body into shock and im usually ok with handling pain. drs can poke me with needles all day and its a cake walk compared to that.
I stopped using the paste early on. I used eakins for awhile but then switched to coloplast strip paste, almost same as eakins but cheaper. Powder didn't hurt me at all.

Hi Sweet Honey
I agree with all the other suggestions given. . . .especially going to see a stoma nurse, as soon as possible, before your skin breaks down more. However, if you are desperate, I was given this trick 20 years ago. It helps. After you take off an old appliance and clean/dry your skin, apply a coat of Milk of Magnesia to your skin. It acts as a soothing barrier. There are more effective solutions out there that a nurse can suggest for you but in the meantime this could be worth a try. . . .and it's fairly inexpensive.
Good Luck

I feel so sorry for you & all the pain that you are going through just to change your appliance. When I had my ileostomy I found the longest wearing washers for me were the Perma-Type New-Form Karaya Washers. Link for them is:

sweethoney, i am not sure if you have found a solution.
if not, i had the same problem. the fix was eakin rings!
remove all adhesive using adhesive remover wipes and shave area of all hair
dry stoma area
surround stoma with stoma powder
use barrier skin wipe to remove excess powder from skin
surround stoma with stoma powder again
use barrier skin wipe to remove excess powder from skin again
place eakin ring
place wafer
this should last you 4-6 days without burning and or itching. i hope it works for you as well as it has for me or longer!

sweethoney,
How are you doing now? Did the eakins seals save the day for you?
If so, I've got a TON of them I could send you if you cover shipping.
I don't use them anymore- I prefer the Cymed seals. They're basically the same exact thing, except only sticky on 1 side, I can get them pre-cut to the size of my stoma and they're not as thick, so much more flexible.
Ditch the paste- it was a big-time skin irritant for me, too. The seals are the exact opposite- they really have a healing effect.
Also,
Your skin is going to only get worse if you're changing everything out every day, especially if you're doing it 2x a day.

When I told my nurse about this problem right away she told me to stop using the paste. I used the Eakins ring for a while then once the rash disappeared I stopped using that too. Never felt better.

sweethoney,
I have the same pain around my stoma. It was diagnosed as a skin condition called Pyoderma. It is extremely painful. Causes ulcers on the skin. My treatment was injections of steroids, Hydrocortisone I think, directly into the effected area, and special dressings on the ulcers before I apply the wafer. The dressings are called Aquacel. It looks like cotton. I put that over the ulcers, cover them with a thin duoderm, then place my wafer with a ring of paste around the opening on the top. It has been working fantastic. A bit of work involved, but I am healing very well, and it reduces the pain. I can keep a wafer on for 3-4 days if I choose to with no leaking. Hope you are doing better.

What does that look like? I have a spot right against my stoma that started out as raw, red skin, then started bleeding, and now it looks sort of white. The wax and paste keeps wearing away there, so it keeps getting worse and more painful. I was wondering if it was something like that or just irritation.
Todd,
I noticed you mentioned reply you use Cymed Seals. Which brand do you use for the rest of wafer/pouching system? Do you just stretch the Cymed Seal over the stoma then apply the wafer over it sticky side to the skin. I am not getting much wear time with the other barrier rings.

Gmarie,
I use the Cymed 1-piece with their extended barrier ring, in conjunction to the Cymed Seals.
One of the nice things about the Cymed Seals is that you can order them pre-cut for the diameter of your stoma, so NO stretching necessary.
Yes- sticky side down onto my clean, dry skin, then wafer on the 1-piece down over stoma, on top of the seal...
I find them MUCH more comfortable than the Eakins, WAY less messy, MUCH easier to apply, more flexible and lower profile.
I used to get 2-3 days with eakin seals before it would begin to leak- I've gotten as long as 5 days with the Cymed seals, primarily because they are so much more flexible.
Hope this helps!
