To all those suffering from chronic pouchitis that is refractory to antibiotics and the standard anti-inflammatory treatment regimen, the drug rebamipide may offer some hope. It has traditionally been used to treat gastritis. Rebamipide has anti-ulcer properties and promotes epithelial cell growth.

Here's a link to the World Journal of Gastroenterology discussing a case study about a patient with severe pouchitis successfully treated with this drug:

If you do a web search, there seems to be other encouraging information about this drug out there.

It's obviously too early to know just how helpful this drug could be, but I did want to pass along some information that could offer some hope.

Might be worth talking to our doctors about!

I am guessing it was not as promising as they thought otherwise those of us with chronic pouchitis would be prescribed it. I emailed my GI with this exact question day to see if he prescribes it at all.

I'm actually not sure if it's even approved in the U.S. for anything. The studies they've done with this have primarily been in Japan. I wonder if they have done more studies there since this one. I did email one of the Japanese physicians whose name is on the report, but haven't heard anything back.

It may be beneficial; it just needs to be made available, provided it is safe.

Hi,

I know this topic is way too old but I amcurious about the use of rebamipide in IBD. It is said to help mucosal healing throughout the gastrointestinal tract. I believe it may be used as an adjuvant drug along with regular therapy. I guess it's worth to give it a shot.

Rebamipide is available in a few countries only and India is one of them. Luckily, a friend of mine is India now and she is coming back to Istanbul, Turkey in a week.

I have antibiotic-refractory pouchitis. I have been on Humira - one injection per week, for three years. Unfortunately, it's not helping much. For this reason, I also take 250 mg Cipro and 250 mg Flagyl once in the mornings. All these just help keep the pouchitis at bay. I still have burning-like pain in the lower left part of my abdomen.

I'll post again when I get Rebamipide tabs and report back my experience.
