Just experienced my first bout of pouchitis which was treated with flagyl. It was not exactly a barrel of laughs given the side effects of the drug (stiff neck, headaches, body aches, slight nausea).

I have been off it for a couple of days now and while I don't have the same level of aches and pains I continue to have problems. In particular I am very weak and fatigue easily. I find myself sleeping at least of couple of hours in the middle of the day - not at all normal for me. It is a very similar feeling I experienced post surgery - like I am back to square one in my recovery.

Has anyone else experienced post flagyl/pouchitis related problems? and if so, how long did they persist? This is bumming me out.

You just went through the wringer so to speak. Pouchitis takes it out of you and also probably messed up your nutrition. Especially if there was a slow escalation and delay before you finally got relief with the meds.

Sleep when you're tired, it's the best thing for you and when your body heals most effectively. Work on a balanced diet, get your nutrition straight, get fluids back into yourself and you should start feeling a lot better over the next couple of days.

Pouchitis always does this to me and unfortunately I have ot chronically so if I miss my augmentin for a few days or a few doses in beween I feel like I have been hit by a truck, total body aches, fatigue, insomnia from interrupted sleep, butt brun and just a plain lousy feeling of malaise. I agree that you need to up your fluid intake and rest when needed and try and stick to natural foods at this time.

I still am amazed at folks who get pouchitis on occasion versus some of us who have it chronically. I often wonder what triggers it for the people who get it on occasion versus us who have it chronically and seem to get no relief other than from continual antibiotics.

Do you notice if you are not rigid about diet
(adding more sweets etc), you may get a flare of pouchitis?

Thank you LionsPride - sounds like good advice to me. It was indeed a prolonged period before I received treatment.

kjeane - this is my first experience with pouchitis so I don't know if there is a connection to my diet. I do know that it occurred when I stopped taking probiotics (not because I wanted to, but because I ran out and it took me a couple of weeks to get more). I'm hoping it doesn't become a chronic thing. I can't imagine what it must be like to live with this all the time.

In terms of diet, what natural foods do you recommend? The only things I am trying to avoid at present are too much sugar and diary (not lactose intolerant, but diary does seem to cause me problems).

I experience fatigue for about a week after stopping Flagyl. All side side effects you listed are the reason why I no longer take Flagyl for pouchitis (combined with the fact that it doesn't help me at all unless combined with Cipro). If things don't improve in a couple of weeks, maybe you should schedule another appointment with your GI. Until then, rest up!
