After being on a waiting list for almost 3 months, I've finally got an appointment to see a GI at Mt. Sinai in Toronto on September 11. Now, this is a new guy who just joined the staff at the beginning of August and is taking "overflow patients." I'm not seeing him for any particular issue right now, but it's more just to have a GI contact since right now I have no "pouch doctor" whatsoever. Hope this doctor is well versed in the pouch...

My surgeon told me I could come see him any time if I have pouch issue. That makes me feel good knowing he's the one that did the handy work. I haven't seen my GI since before my surgeries but I know I can see her too since she has patients with j pouches.

Thanks! I actually haven't seen a GI in over 5 years. My surgeon is great and very knowledgeable. I would have loved to have continued seeing him, but I understand why it makes more sense to have a GI. My surgeon discharged me from his care last year, because really, the surgical aspect of all of this is now behind me and as he put it, "there really isn't anything left for him to do." He left the door open that if I did have an issue I could be referred back to him, but I would like a doctor who I can go to for general maintenance, follow up and any other non-surgical issue that might crop up. I haven't been scoped in over 2 years so that's something else I'll probably need. I just can't believe how long it took to get an appointment!

Although I don't have a real G.I. doc here I do have a friend who can do the work and write the scripts for me if need be...mostly it is my generalist and if I have any problems I have my surgeon order the tests up (pouchoscopy or opacification)...it is a good idea to have one who knows you and your condition and can deal with anything that may come up....if he is good and kind and understanding then make sure that his name circles around here for the other Torotonians here!

Yes, I will certainly report back on the experience. That said, I don't believe in "badmouthing" doctors by name here because I don't think that's what this site is for, but if this doctor turns out to be great, I will certainly recommend him to other Torontotonain pouchers!

I've got my surgeon's e-mail address (and I use it too).
Quite impressed so far! GI's name is Dr. Van Assche and he's extremely well versed in the pouch. I went in expecting to have to explain everything and he just KNEW stuff. *LOL* Anyway, having a pouchoscopy next week (first in almost 3 years) and if all is good with that, then I only have to go back for annual follow ups, with perhaps a pouchoscopy every 2-3 years.
