Hey guys, so here is my story:

I have gone through a 3-step J-Pouch surgery with the final step taken four weeks ago. The first few days was okay, but eventually I did suffer a lot with extreme gas pains and nausea (probably some partial blockages).

The doctors made a pouchscopy and identified a severe case of bacterial growth in the intestine just above my new friend Mr. Pouch. Probably an auto reaction from the body to my surgery. My surgeon (who is very qualified and experienced) has only seen this 6 times before but is certain that the bacterial growth has caused me all that gas and pain.

Long story short, I ended up taking antibiotics and prednisone (never thought I would be getting this sh*t again with my colon now gone) and still do today. The new blood samples show completely normal values of infection and I am feeling better. The amount of gas has decreased - so far so good!

However, I still struggle with gas pains, especially late in the day where my stomach is the most busy. The problem is that I can't seem to pass gas when I'm on the toilet at all, only stool. Fortunately, when lying down on my stomach or on the left side, it is rather easy for me to recognize gas and to let it out without any "accidential follow ups". But this just isn't acceptable in the long run, I mean, you can't just lie down every now and then when at school or work etc. I don't wanna be the lying-down-guy Wink

I really want to be able to pass the gas along with the stool when on the toilet. Did any of you experience this problem in the beginning? I surely hope it will get better Smiler

Thanks in advance!

i have that problem now, sort of..there are times when i can let gas out on the throne, and others where its just not there...what i do (and i know this still is not feasable while at school or work) if i have alot of gas or know that the gas is whats keeping me going to the bathroom alot, i will lay down on my side or something in the bathroom and when i feel that urge about to hit..jump up like a monkey and im able to get most of it out. havent had to do this in a little while, I'm 2 months one week out.

I never had issues passing gas (except in a standing position, haven't done that since 1990!). I can do it on the toilet, sitting, or lying down without issue.

When I did have issues, my pouch outlet had narrowed, and I had to go for dilations. I also had to strain to pass stool at that time, too. Surgeons can tell with a digital exam if that's an issue for you.

Some folks just have weird angled pouches, though, and are forced to do aerobics, if you will, to get the gas out.
