Long time everyone! I hope everything is well. I still check in occasionally to go through threads and what not.

I'm recently having more issues than I would desire. From the 1 year mark to 2 years, I was great with having around 4-6 bm's a day with no issues.

However, The past 6-8 months my bm's have gone up to 7-10 with me having rectum issues such as inflammation in the rectum wall.

I think the inflammation contributes to my # of bm's because it makes it harder to hold in.

I also just experience more pressure in the rectal area recently, which causes a bm.

I have a dr's appt this afternoon and will probably get a cream antibiotic I can insert for the inflammation, cipro to control bm's, and pain meds for discomfort.

Any other ideas???

Thanks everyone,

Sam

The rectal inflammation is called cuffitis, and it is not treated with a cream antibiotic. It is treated with mesalamine suppositories (Canasa) or hydrocortisone suppositories.

You may well have pouchitis too, as it is not uncommon for them to occur together. Your doctor would be able to tell if you have cuffitis by a simple digital rectal exam. If the Cipro does not improve things in a few days, you may need to be scoped to be sure there is pouchitis.

Sam,

I just want to add that I used to think I was suffering from pouchitis when I had the symptoms you are describing. I have found out over time and multiple scopes that I have chronic cuffitis
and I also have a stricture at my anastomosis.

I often have pressure as you describe which ups my bowel movements. I have been on canasa suppositories pretty much consistently since my takedown over 2 years ago, but miraculously, Cipro always helps with my cuff and anal discomfort better than canasa alone, even when I do not have active pouchitis.

If you can manage on Canasa alone, that would be the first option, but if not, the Cipro combined may help your symptoms.
