Hello
I have just had my j pouch takedown surgery 2 weeks ago and need advise on issues I am having. I am having too many BMs throughout the day and is really taking a toll on my energy levels and am not able to sleep as I am constantly going to the bathroom.
I am hoping to find out if anyone has suggestions that can lower the frequency of my bathroom visits.
Also I am having difficulty in differentiating between a BM and passing gas.
Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

I am sure many will give you great ideas to help you, but you will see one similar message in all that 2 weeks is not enough to see improvements. Frequency will reduce but it takes some time. You will have to measure your progress in months rather than weeks. There are many good ideas in past posts on how to help reduce and thicken stool, here's one recent similar post that contains good information. I hope you feel better soon. Wish you all the best.

This may sound strange..... but I like to think of my pouch as a water balloon. Lay on your side and the fluid "stool" will gravitate sideways too. Think of the fluid as being below the air opening (your anus). However "gas" will not gravitate and it may be easier to release gas through your anus without releasing stool.

My pouch is on my lower right side of my abdomen, so I find that laying on my right side is best.

I still do not find it easy to release gas without stool while sitting. I still have to roll to my side.

Occasionally, I can release gas on the toilet, but not without some straining to fight the whole gravity issue.

Yeah, it's a bummer to say it but 15+ times a day is normal so soon after surgery. It gets better I promise. I know the lack of sleep thing is hard but you should start seeing improvement as the weeks pass. My surgeon warned me that it's crazy for a bit after takedown. A lot of surgeons fail to tell their patients as to what to expect immediately post take down. Hang in there!
