Hi all,

I've had my j pouch since 2007 - zero problems, never had pouchitis, nothing. I am edging towards menopause, and stopped controlling my periods with birth control about one year ago. I did not have a significant period until this week.  (Really over a year without a period.)

Now I am having significant pouch problems. Severe cramping (just like back when I had active UC - I did NOT miss that), frequent trips to the bathroom, night time leakage (Didn't have that even post surgery), trouble getting thing moving, etc.. The only thing missing is actual bleeding (from my pouch).

Could this be *just* because of my period? Does anyone experience these symptoms, and then they disappear once your period is done? Or is a dose of anti-biotics in order? I've looked at some posts, and it seems like this might be normal-ish, but I'm wondering if I should wait it out, or not.

I'm about to leave on a cruise and am not sure I can fit in a scope, etc before I go. The timing of this is terrible.

Thanks, folks!

I would call your doc for a prescription especially knowing you’re about to go on a cruise! I’ve never had pouch symptoms as a result of My menstrual cycle. I’ve had pouchitis, and I’ve had bad periods, and while they share the commonality of “cramping” it’s a different cramping. You know your body, if this feels different than symptoms from a period, I would get a prescription ASAP so it doesn’t ruin your trip. My doc Doesn’t require a scope to write a once in a blue moon prescription for a pouch flareup. Give them a call, it may be a quick appt or they may just send the script!!

I have always had irritation of the pouch/anal area with my cycle.  Now that I don't have the periods anymore, I still get cycles, meaning there will be a PMS-like time and there may be lower back ache, digestive disturbance, and soreness in the anal area and if they go on too long, there can also be increased inflammation in the pouch which leads to night time leakage.  When I have PMS-symptoms, I take "Peacekeeper" from "Herbalogic."  It clears those symptoms up, plus decreases irritability & sleep disturbance that also can accompany the cycle. If I have night leakage, I get more rest and take more visbiome probiotic and it goes away in a couple days.  I can always feel the inflammation because my pants fit tighter around the waist, and that tightness is always there before the leakage, though the inflammation doesn't always lead to leakage.
