It's been a while since I've been on here. It has been 10 yrs since take down and I still cannot eat anything with fiber. Fruits, veggies, and grains are my worst enemy. One bowl of cereal can bring on days of suffering. It causes so much gas which I can only release if in the bathroom if you know what I mean. It also causes horrible rectal spasms that are unbearable. So ultimately I have spent the last 10 yrs avoiding fiber like the plague. Wondering if anyone else has this issue. Seems like everything I read is more along the lines of people getting as much fiber as they can. It may seem weird but I feel my best when I only eat meats and starches such as potatoes, rice, pasta, etc. And it's bad when I eat pre-packaged stuff with preservatives rather than cooking fresh and from scratch. I'm a single mom who works 50-60 hrs a week so cooking from scratch all the time is impossible. I appreciate any input you may have.

well potatoes have fiber but its soluble fiber. i cant eat cereal either except for corn pops because its all soluble fiber. insoluble fiber like all the others you described kill me too. frequent urgent bms with spasms. check this site out about soluble vs insoluble fiber. they say get more soluble than insoluble but with me at lease its zero insoluble or im in trouble. i disagree with some of the foods on this list such as oatmeal which kills me but its a great start. i do get gas from soluble fiber but its not uncomfy. i dont love it but i can definitely live with it. insoluble fiber ferments so so fast it causes unbearable gas. soluble takes longer. i dont understand the exact science behind it but it works. http://www.helpforibs.com/diet/fiber1.asp by the way its not just us pouchies. people with irritable bowel syndrome cant eat insoluble fiber either and im willing to bet many others too...

Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I can only eat oatmeal if it is the instant packets and I cook it until it is extremely soft. The regular kind is a no-go for sure. I try to just focus on protein such as hard cheeses and peanut butter. Those work really well. I will check that site out, thank you sooooo much!! All in all it is still better than the life I had before the j-pouch. Living with colitis was not an option and having the surgeries was still the best thing I ever did. I notice you just had yours done this year. I pray you are doing well and having no complications.
Sounds like you get lots of fiber in your diet, since the fiber we are always talking about is soluble fiber, that is found in starchy vegetables and grains. It seems that it is insoluble fiber that you are sensitive to. That is what you find in fruits and vegetables. Lots of folks have trouble with them too. I agree that you may have IPS, with is like IBS, just with a pouch instead of a colon.

I am sort of the opposite, because I am like a human garbage disposal. I can eat anything (unfortunately for my hips!) Sure, some things scoot right through me, but I pay it no mind. I cannot pass gas without also staining my shorts, so I never let one slip unless I am on the toilet. But the comparison stops there, since I don't have much of a problem with cramps and whatnot.

My point? We are all different, and you need to find what works for you. Hopefully, you will get some good tips on how to manage better while not tying your gut in knots!

I can definitely deal with the gas. After so many years, you get to where you just don't notice it that much. I have a very high tolerance for pain. It is more annoying than anything else. Every now and then I will get a air bubble with a sharp pain and then I feel it pop. That hurst for a few seconds and I just hold my breath. Like you, I won't allow myself to release it or I will have to change clothes. Smiler Sometimes I crave those things I know will not end well, but you just say the heck with it and make sure you are at home near the bathroom. haha
