I'm at least 2 months post-takedown, feel great, life is good. Two days ago I felt the left (my left) side of my abdomen, opposite where my stoma was, pretty much in line with my belly button, and it feels like there's a lump. No pain, and it's not even noticeable when I lie down, and hardly noticeable when I sit, but it's very noticeable when I stand.

From what I've read about hernias on the site, they're not uncommon and can be repaired surgically, with great success.

My question is: if this does turn out to be a hernia, is this a weird location to have one? From what I've read, they tend to be closer to the groin.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

If you have a midline incision, then it would not be uncommon to develop an incisional hernia along either side of it. Basically, the fascia tears away from the midline and there you are. Groin hernias are not typically related to this type of surgery. Hernias at the stoma site are also common.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

As I read your post, Jan, I thought, of course. I had a mid-line incision, straight up and down, and this bulge is just to the left of it. Think I'll follow up with my surgeon and see if he thinks it should be repaired.

Thanks!

I had a incisional hernia repaired about 9 months ago. My surgeon put in a mesh and now I'm able to do very heavy lifting with no more problems so far - so the repair must be very strong. I do a lot of abdominal work to keep the area strong and minimize the chances of more hernias later.
