Many people mention taking probiotics. Sounds good to me! But um, wait... what do they do? I know what they do in the colon, but how can they help after the colon has been removed? Is this something I should be taking?

Also, what about fish oil? I have heard about people with UC taking this as well. Again, is it useful if you no longer have the colon?

Thanks everyone! Smiler

I take a probiotic pill called Culturelle in the mornings. And at night, I take a liquid bottle of DanActive. I have been doing this for a couple of years and have had no pouchitis in my K-pouch.

I don't know about fish oil.

Probiotics colonize in the small bowel too. There is evidence that at least VSL#3 prevents pouchitis if it is taken soon after surgery.

Fish oil has many wonderful qualities, heart health among the top ones. It's usefulness for the gut is less clear, but there have been some studies that indicate it is helpful in managing gut mucosal inflammation.

I take both. Neither do any harm and they can possibly be quite good for you. However, if you are not taking them and are doing perfectly fine, you do not have to take them.

Take a deep breath and relax; this too will pass.

I take both probiotics and fish oil. If nothing else, it's good for your health otherwise Smiler
