I love a good glass of red wine (OK a big one). Can you still enjoy it with the bag and a J Pouch? What are the side effects if any. Surgery will be in December 2008.

I have no problems with wine. I stick to a dry red, sugar sometimes will cause discomfort.

Red wine shouldnt be a problem.

There are lots of wine drinkers on this site. Since takedown i haven't had any trouble with a glass or two (or maybe even a bottle...) now and then.

I love a good Merlot! No problems for me ever. However, do keep in mind that we will all have different reactions to different things! Enjoy! Perhaps start with a small glass and work your way up. Oh ya, I also feel the effects of alcohol quite fast, my husband enjoys chuckling at me after a glass of wine. Not sure if that's me or due to the loss of the colon.

I was drinking wine at a holiday party about 2.5 weeks after my first surgery (colectomy, jpouch creation and temp ileo). That's probably not recommended, but it was the Christmas season! I knew a nurse who was also in attendance and she asked me when my surgery was! She couldn't believe I was less than three weeks post surgery. But then, the percoset and vicodin both make me puke so I had no pain meds after hospital discharge so I wasn't mixing the alcohol with anything dangerous.

After my takedown, I still enjoy wine without problems. I'm a lightweight, but I was prior to my surgery too!

I find I cannot metabolize alcohol of any kind any more, not with my j-pouch and not with my perm ostomy. 1/3 of a glass of wine will send me into a dizzy spell. I was never a big drinker anyway, but I definitely noticed a difference. Doesn't mean I couldn't have it, but I don't enjoy that feeling and like I said was never a big drinker anyway so it hasn't been a loss for me.

Everyone is different, so you could be like most of these other folks and not have an issue.

I have problems with red wine, but not white or spirits.

No problems here - either with the temp ileo or the J pouch.

I have never had a problem with red wine either with my j-pouch or with Wee Willie (my perminent end ileo). I love Merlot, Fleurie, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chateauneuf du Pape.

I would make sure you have a practice glass of wine while at home before trying it on a social occasion though so that you know how your new plumbing will tolerate it.

I take it all. At first I though my best friend Chivas Regal and I where going to have to part ways, but it was not to be. I can drink (what I consider in moderation...) with no problem at all. What gives me hell are regular foods like raisins and coconuts and trying to decipher which ones are going to obstruct me or set my bottom on fire.
Start with very small amounts and you will know if you can tolarate it or not.

I had no problem at all when I had my bag. Since takedown I don't tollerate quite as well. It seems to right through me. I'm a big red wine fan.
